Meh. I have so much tech in my life and rate it based upon value. There is no value in Carplay. In fact, it's a downgrade Vs iDrive. With iDrive I have spotify integration, in fact any music app if i just want BT audio, great nav and full control of all the other infotainment features. With Carplay I can do carplay stuff and have to exit to do infotainment stuff. Weak. And that before you consider I have to use APPLE MAPS for nav, forget that, it's terrible and doesn't benefit from wheel position and speed sensors for tunnels and bad GPS signal areas.

What is CarPlay and why does every one want it?!
As the title say really. I simple don't understand the fuss about CarPlay.
For those of you not already familiar with it the following is taken direct from Apple's website: http://www.apple.com/uk/ios/carplay/ Quote:
Directions - It's called a satnav. Most cars have them these days and the M2, at least in the UK, comes with nav out the factory at no extra cost. Apple maps sucks balls. Can i use Google maps instead? Calls - Yup, we've had bluetooth car kits for years. What's so special about this version.... phone rings, i press a button on my steering wheel and BOOM car phone! Messages - Really, should we be reading off a screen while driving? I say not. Is it so hard to read them of the phone itself when stopped at the lights? No. Road safety statistics (for the UK at least) show using your phone while driving to be as dangerous as drink driving. Is it really worth it? Music - Yup got that to. Even my 1980's Mk2 Golf GTi had this. I think they called it a Radio Cassette player. Ok time moves on, we have CD players now. ok, ok, MP3 players. ok ok, all your musics on one device. Well 99.999% of the time I only listen to Radio 4. The other .001% ALL the music I own is stored on a USB stick as FLAC. USB stick £10. iThing £££ My point is what exactly does CarPlay do that we don't have already. Is it a problem looking for a solution (alla Apple Watch) or am i missing something? Or is it case of iSheep following the wolf? Is apple trying to break into the car entertainment market by asking car makers to install dumb screen and rely on the user to bring the functionality with them (like the airlines are doing)? What makes Apple think everyone has or wants an iThing? Seriously guys help me out here, what am I missing? Last edited by CommitConfirm; 11-03-2016 at 08:45 PM.. |

I'm with you. Don't get it. I'd rather spend the $300 on some other option, maybe lumbar for example.

It does not display your text messages, it reads them to you and will allow you to dictate a reply. I've actually found it quite useful. Although you have to keep your replies short and simple because Siri sucks at understanding what you are saying.
Also, there are apps on your phone such as Pandora or Spotify that are designed to work with Car Play with hopefully more to come. At the end of the day, iOS is a very familiar interface to the millions who own iPhones so I could see how some would choose to use Car Play over iDrive for some tasks. Since I'm on my third Bimmer with iDrive I've become somewhat accustomed to it but I'll admit when I first started using it I did not always find iDrive to be the most intuitive interface. Hopefully Car Play will get better as time goes on (assuming Apple and BMW updates it.) |

I had it added as an option before doing any proper due diligence. After I looked into it, I removed the option. Completely pointless gimping of both the phone and the iDrive, IMHO.

Because it's a single device that you configure and maintain and connect to other devices when you need the functionality.
Do you want to go back to the days of carrying an cell phone, gps, iPod, Garmin and then also having to enter, sync and update that same information to multiple cars, contacts, locations, etc. that each have different proprietary interfaces. My iPhone works the same on both my 2008 X5 and 2016 M2. Now at least on the M2 I dont have to plug it in and can use a similar interface through the car. I partially agree that CarPlay mostly useless, at least the way it is working right now. The fact that text-messages cannot be read, emails are not even available and other apps available are all internet radio stations is a real bummer.
BUT, i find those 300 bucks a good investment though, at least if you are already an apple ecosystem user, and this for mainly 2 reasons: 1) Music streaming and Apple Music: Having all my music in the cloud with iTunes Match and being an Apple Music subscriber, the integration in the car's iDrive display is seamless. I can browse my music, mixes, stations and i am even able to like/dislike songs on the screen. I guess this point counts also for Spotify which is available for CarPlay. 2) Maps and especially frequent/smart destinations: When i get into the car, apple maps already knows where i want to go and offers me direct navigation to that destination. Living and working in a country with high traffic, this comes quite handy as it offers me the quickest way to get to work/home or other destinations in my calendar without having to interact with the car/connected app up-front. It is not as good as the BMW Navigations system, that i still use for longer distances, but as a daily traffic-jam avoidance system, it is quite ok. And to sum this up, adding an extra 300 to a car that costs >60k and considering that CarPlay will get better over the coming years makes this option a no-brainer for me.

I hate the iDrive interface for accessing media on my phone. If I want to switch from a podcast (which I listen to a lot of podcasts) to my, say, Apple Music I have to pick up my phone and make that switch. Whereas in Car Play all those apps are there to switch to and have their own interfaces. Look I'm not saying Car Play is the best thing since sliced bread. It's far from it. I'm just saying if the source of most of your media is on your phone I could see how some would rather use Car Play over the menu driven, and often clunky, iDrive. If you think $300 for Car Play is a waste, I paid $350 for the "BMW Apps" package on the MY14 X6. That was a waste. |

Unfortunately Pandora is only available in the Untied States, NZ & Australia. Which is a shame for us in Europe as personally I love it, i think it's the best of the streaming media services. |
