M2 LCI "Turbo" Noise normal?

Hey guys,

Got the m2 last week, and coming from a Golf R I am hearing some interesting wooshing noises. Under any amount of throttle, I am hearing a deep, "exhale" type of woosh that seems to increase with rpm, however, it does not sound like any turbo whistle under load that I have experienced. Even at 2000 rpm on throttle is a exhale type deep woosh, and I am wondering if this could possibly be a vacuum leak somewhere in the intake system?

Anybody else have a similar sound? I am used to the high pitched intake and turbo sounds from the golf and dont really have anything to compare this to.

Video would be your best bet to get a better idea of the sounds. Some sounds are normal. I’ve had MQB VWs as well as the M2 and they all make different noises, more than likely nothing to worry about.

Another question is whether you have any modifications that you are aware of. Upgraded diverted valve or blow off valve would give you more of what you’re describing. An intake would give you more noise as well.

Pretty sure what you’re describing is normal but video will make it easier to be sure. Everything feel smooth? Holding boost? Etc?

Throttle and everything feels smooth, but the deep woosh sounds slightly 'choppy' and continues for maybe 1/2sec after lift off, only really noticeable <5k rpm, and I also notice the sound when I downshift to around ~4k rpm, would It be normal to be hearing turbo sounds on downshifts with no throttle applied?
Thanks!

Hearing a loud pop when letting off throttle quickly under heavy load is normal. Under less load than that when you let off throttle you may get some flutter. Sounds on downship off throttle sounds a bit more strange. Is your car DCT or manual?

Car is a DCT, Im aware the popping/farting on lift off is normal, but Im talking about maybe 1/3 throttle then letting off, the wooshing sound continues and dies down. If I were doing a light throttle pull, this is what the sound would be like lol: woOoOooOOOOOOOOOsSsSshhhhhhhh, but the sound is the same the whole time, just the pitch/intensity changes with rpm. Identical sound on light throttle as there is on a downshift

Record the sound and post it here, it'll be easier

https://www.kapwing.com/w/tlQUzAoQ3E Heres the video, you can kind of hear the sound in it, but it also seems like there is a higher pitched sound that accompanies the wooshing noise

Sounds normal to me. The turbo noise seems normal and the higher pitch you are hearing sounds like the differential to me. But both seem normal.

I can tell what the diff whine is, and the higher pitch sound is associated with the intake system, not the diff. The vid didnt do a great job of getting the woosh on audio, but typically how loud are the stock turbos on these cars? It sounds like a rough wooshing, not a smooth turbo whistle

Hard to convey. Also tough for me being far from stock for many years. If you’re able to get a better video to point it out I could tell you better.

You would not hear the turbo with this amount of throttle/in 7th gear, the turbo spools at higher revs/load and even then it's not really something that is very audible from the cabin with windows closed.

Its going into the dealer next week, should I ask them to check if there are any vacuum leaks then?

I would just ask them to drive it and she your concern and have them check it out in that case.

Don't think normal in my experience. Stock turbo is not exactly pronounced on my car, windows down gunning it maybe a little. See what dealer says?

Bruh....

The dealer told me that the wooshing boost is normal and that there is no boost leak or anything, and any boost sounds im hearing is because of my dented muffler.
