Hello Guys need your help
So I recently purchased a BMW M2 black shadow edition from a non BMW dealership in Canada. This is my dream car and I am so excited. I purposely chose this BMW M2 because the paint was in pristine condition and only had 5000km on it. The car is in another province and while waiting for pickup the car appears to have been keyed at the dealers compound. I am very disappointed as the dealer tried to hide the scratches from me. They finally admitted that two panels had to be painted. I am worried as when it comes to re-sell this vehicle I will take a major hit as the original paint is damaged. I was planning to put full 3m paint protection to preserve the paint as long as possible. I asked for a full refund, should I keep the car? should I ask for money back? What do you think is fair compensation ?

I would be upset how the dealer let this happen while I'm their possession. Which leads to greater questions on how the dealer handles their products. Therefore, I would just ask for a build slot as compensation.

Sure you can have it repainted, but I wouldn't feel the same love especially when I expected a brand new car.

OP, just get your money back and continue your search elsewhere.

Paint work isn't the end of the world, and if this happened prior to you putting down a deposit then they technically wouldn't need to disclose it as they could call it part of their reconditioning.

If this happened after your deposit, then you have two options: get your deposit back and walk, or get them to lower their price.

There are other M-Performance editions and black shadow editions in Canada, so if you walk, you still have options.

I think that the whole "paint work affects resale" is blown out of proportion. Accidents happen, and cars get keyed, it's not the end of the world. MY M3CS was damaged during shipment and the front fender needed to be replaced/repainted. It sucks, but things happen that are beyond our control.

A shitty paint job most definitely will affect resale. I looked at two LBB cars before I bought the one I drive now. Both had shitty paintwork done on them. You could see the sanding and Bondo work under the paint.

How deep are the scratches?

Should ask if a detailer can fix that first before having those panels repainted.

That's up to you, it truly depends on what it takes to make it "worth your while"

That being said, you also need to make sure you can still say no if the paint work isn't good or up to your standards.

A dealership that specializes in European cars I wouldn't be overly worried about, but you still want to maintain the right to refusal if it's not done well.

Plus, after the paintwork you'll need to wait 2-3 months to let the paint de-gas before you PPF or ceramic coat.

I'm very picky on paint work and it is extremely difficult to get a 100% match to the factory paint. If you decide to keep the car I would make sure you can take it to the paint shop of your choosing, which they pay for, in addition to a reduction in price.

I don't think they'd agree to that, since good paint work can get expensive quick. So, they'd probably rather give you your money back, paint it themselves and sell it to the next un-suspecting buyer.

The paint will never be like the original. I disagree that you don't have a leg to stand on. If the car had no paint work when you made the deposit then that was the deal...no paint work. The damage changes the deal.

No way I'd buy that car. Respraying those panels will not be easy. Just imagine their body shop, or who they use 3rd party to do their work.

Way too many m2's for sale to settle on this one.

I would walk and find something else. You don't have any way of knowing how well that paintwork is going to hold up over time, and I suspect based upon the dealer's behavior that they will repaint at minimal cost.

It can be repaired but must be done properly by a reputable shop. Would not want it polished out because that means paint has been removed. But it's not like these are rare cars - I'd just find another.

I would walk away from this deal OP. Even if they got it repainted at a BMW certified shop and you couldn't tell the difference, you would still know about it and it will bother you. Not worth the peace of mind.
