The 12v sockets do turn off with the car but only after 5-10 minutes idle after shut off/lock.
When do they turn off ? I went in my car didn’t even start it and the outlet had power .??

They turn on basically once you unlock the car or the keyfob gets near. They turn off a few minutes after you lock the car or the keyfob gets far enough away.

Leave your dashcam plugged in, then just walk away from the car for like half an hour. Go back and check the footage, it should turn off like 10 minutes after you walked away.

Exactly why you wire to the battery and add a battery for the cameras.

Then you always have footage.

A lot of Cameras come with their own batteries built in so that it can record if it detects movement or a shock. Mine has this feature so i didnt feel the need to wire it to my battery.

It's mostly for continuous coverage and that to me is worth the cost of the extra battery.

I have a 2017 M2 with executive package and there's the hole for it, but it's not there :/ Car also came with a cigarette lighter (which I would assume be part of a smoker's package if it were an option).

Just used the 12V socket under the glovebox for my garmin mini 2 and it worked like a charm and shut off about 5mins after locking doors.

MR
I have an 07’ 5-series that actually has the one in front of the shifter, one under passenger footwell, and two more under rear vents on the console, for any rear passenger smokers. Ig mine “qualifies” as smokers package with that many outlets and 3 or 4 ash trays in it. One ash tray up front by the outlet and one in each rear door(that ik of so far). Never found the 12v old style cigar/cigarette lighter, likely previous owner lost it
