Years ago I did a Tail of the Dragon adventure with a large group of BMW M3s, M6s, etc and one guy and his wife in a 325iT wagon. That's 318 turns in 11 miles if you don't know the road. He started in the back and pulled into our turn around point a moment behind everyone else but still a respectable pace for a newbie on the road. Most passengers hate the road but his wife commented "He was going so slow, I told him to speed up!"

This is exactly how I describe the MPS compared to stock suspension. It's busier because of the increased spring rate, but much less crashy because of the fantastic damping.

after all the negative feedback that ive seen regarding the M2's ride, i was pleasantly surprised by my only test drive in a 2019 M2C -- and it sounds like the improvements were pretty significant over the OGM2.
i daily commute the DC beltway in my 228ix and regularly run in sport mode, including the stiffer chassis setting...but my suspension is stock / non-adjustable / non-THP...which i think is still a pretty comfortable ride even though the DC beltway is a gauntlet of expansion joints, potholes, and road debris. for my M2C test drive, i intentionally dialed-up the suspension to get an idea of the 'worst-case scenario' and sought out every expansion joint and pothole that could find on the beltway at 65-75 mph. there were a couple of spine-jarring impacts...but overall, i came away from that 15 minute ride thinking that i would have no problem handling it on a regular basis since i would obviously be much more attentive in avoiding the worst sections of the road.

Although my wife hardly knows anything about different engine/suspension settings in her m235i in default mode in the city she somehow manages to get from point A to point B just as fast as I do in my M2C. I am OK with the m235i as the driver even though it feels infinitely more vague, floaty and mute in comparison. Even though muted in every respect, it is surprisingly quick in most scenarios, just not emotional at all, and handling is actually quite precise, albeit dull, if that makes sense. I hate being a passenger in the m235i because I sometimes get carsick because of that floatiness. I am OK being a passenger in the M2C. In the city, m235i is actually very pleasant to drive, if you are the driver. For longer journeys we'd take the M2C. The trunk of the M2C actually fits more stuff. With M2C I change tires, due to wear. With m235i I am constantly changing rims (hitting the same pothole on M2C usually goes unnoticed while on m235i it often means a bent rim, regardless of which rims you run, stock, bbs, hre, whatever). The ride quality is very good in m235i but feels quite crashy in M2C (when stock). Ice, snow, slush, mountains... I'd actually take the M2C, MDM mode, sport+ and go for it. My wife, on the other hand, doesn't feel comfortable with the rear end stepping out (on any vehicle) and would take the m235i for the same conditions. Summer... I'd take the M2C and my wife would opt for m235i. The M2C is DCT, on MP coilovers, and was on the stock suspension the first summer and winter. Had it for 1.5 years. The m235i is automatic, on KW DCC + BBK, and been on the stock suspension initially and then on Eibach Pro-Kit. Had it for 5 years. Parts and repairs are cheaper for m235i. Our M2C is my wife's daily driver. That should say enough. But it gets better, she's figured out on our bad road and hilly roads that the faster she drives it the better it complies! Much more comfortable than her Audi A3 S-Line Black Edition was. She is a keeper
But I agree, the ride isn't bad at all. Pretty impressive actually. My daily drive is supercharged Range Rover with active air suspension. |

Aside from the comfort aspect... I got a chance to drive an M240i and an M2C this past weekend back to back on a track and some of the differences were astounding.
Namely- The 240i suspension is far softer and exhibits a significant amount of body lean... so much so that I would be bothered by it every day that I drove the car on the street. The ZF8 appears to shift fast in auto mode but somehow felt rougher on the upshifts than the DCT - no idea why... this really surprised me. It also appeared that under these more stressful all out conditions, the gearbox got confused quite a few times. Last but not least is a vast difference in steering and turn in... the 240i steering is extremely floaty and the on center is virtually dead... the M2C's is crisp and precise. With that being said there is more to consider between both cars depending on what it is you're truly looking for. |

Only driven 2 M2's in past, and it was stiff, nothing to bad. Again, if you live in city with lots of potholes/bad roads maybe not so great.
I changed bushings on front of 235i and it dialed in control and a bit of stiffness, but all the difference in Sport+ mode. With forged rims and PS4S, big difference. Def. not "mushy" even compared to M2 lol. If I used for track more. def. go with M2. Daily, with few mods 2 series is good, and my track days are still fun. I could change springs, but for light track and road driver, not necc. |
