Ride quality M2 v. 240i

Since I generally have my wife in the car over half the time, I would be interested in any SOTP comparisons of those who have compared these two great cars. Unfortunately, my dealer doesn't have an M2C to compare to...

Thanks.

They are nothing alike. M240 feels like mush. The M2 is stiff as hell. With my 17 M2 you dodged potholes and manhole covers like the plague. My 21 comp is a little better.

The 240s ride is much more compliant. It's not close. Much better to be the driver v passenger in M2 .

I had an m240i prior to my M2C. The m240i in sport setting is similar to the M2C. The m240i in comfort is noticeably more compliant and comfortable.

FWIW I don't find the M2C suspension overly harsh to live with, unlike the x73 suspension on my 2016 Cayman S, but it's a very subjective thing.

I just sold my m240 last month and while it's does have a slightly cushier ride, the M2C has pleasantly surprised me. The 240 would bounce and float over certain big bumps on the highway and feel almost uncontrolled if going a little too fast. The M2C stays planted, controllable and stays firm without rattling in those same areas. I'm shocked at how bad people make the ride seem. I like it better than the m240. My CLA45 had a horrid ride, slamming and rattling into highway dips. That suspension was a total fail.

I had a 2014 M235i before my M2C. The ride is definitely stiffer in the M2, but not terrible at all. I prefer the ride in the M.

Depends on the wife Reason I say that is everyone's tolerance is different. My wife sat in my car for a 20 min drive when I brought it home, and has never stepped foot in it since. It wasn't just the suspension, but all the other aspects like noise, engine grunt, acceleration, feedback etc too. I've driven many variants of BMWs (not the 240i), and true M cars are just tuned differently, and will be different. Put her in both and see if you can

Wonder what she would think of a hot lap ride with Mike Renner or other top driver? Thrilled? Screaming? Or shear panic?

This. I owned a 350z as my only car for over a decade before the M2c. So my partner hasn’t ever complained about the ride. But she’s definitely never had the expectation of me driving anything remotely comfortable. I could see her complaining if my car was lowered or on aftermarket suspension that was at all stiffer, but the M2c I think represents the very stiffest end of “normal.”

I had a M240i with the adaptive suspension (this is key, I have no idea what the stock M240i suspension is like) for the last 3 years. I’ve had my M2C for almost a month now.

The M2C suspension in terms of ride quality seems pretty similar to the sport suspension on the M240i. Comfort suspension on the M240i is obviously way cushier. My passenger who is notorious for complaining about stiff cars has not made any comments about the M2 being any stiffer than the M240i in sport suspension as a passenger, so that’s the best observation I can provide.

Thanks.
drove both 2019 m240i and 2020 m2c.

240 is definitely softer on the streets however m2c is not harsh stiff where you will feel every bump impact in your spine. Two other major differences: steering and stability are superior in m2c. 240 steering is horrid like soft rubber band with no feedback. Also rims have weird et.

DCT xmsn in m2c is lightning fast with instant response.

If you are not hitting back roads or track 240 may be sufficient if price and comfort are priority.

Coming straight from a 240i.....the spring rate is quite a bit stiffer on the M2C, but it has a better quality damper set. That results in an overall busier ride, but without the harsh crashing that plagues the 240. It also has much better body control, especially on the rear than the 240.

My wife does not like being a passenger in my M2. However I think it has more to do with how I drive rather than any particular fault of the vehicle

I've come from two M135i's and two M140i's all with adaptive dampers and I am very happy with the ride of the M2C on Uk roads. I was worried my wife might not agree so the first time she rode it in we were chatting and I said nothing about the car. Later she was on the phone to her mum and her mum said "what's the new car like?" and my wife said "very comfortable" and the best bit - "very planted"! How cool is that!

Totally agree!

The other day while out running errands with the wife I started to drive like a hooligan and after a few power slides around corners and rapid accelerations my wife look at me and said "can you please warn me before you do that, so I don't look like an idiot over here screaming and trying to hang on for dear life!"

I think we are making progress? lol

driving alone is always the more pure experience...I cherish those drives...honestly when I have a chatty passenger I may as well be driving a corolla

And the funny part is that there is nothing over there for anyone to hold onto. They reach for an "oh-s***" handle, but alas, it is not there.

Amen to that brother.

When I have a girl in the passenger seat, it's normally two types of reaction.
1. "Why is your car so bumpy?"
2. (Happy screaming) -WOT on the freeway

I prefer to hang with the second type
Interesting enough, when I was stock suspension, the same girl thought the car was quite comfortable.
It's only when I got on coilovers she noticed the extra harshness. But she still liked the speed.
