Is DCT worth the money?
Everybody says it's been pulled straight from the M4 but that's not strictly true given there is no Drivelogic controller?
Surely the controller makes this gearbox worth the money given the control and settings. It's a fair premium to pay but given I'm coming straight from a 1M I'm unlikely to tick this box even though the dealer is trying to get me to drive the M4 DCT. Thoughts? |

I wouldn't get a DCT for a DD, not worth the money and it's not as much fun. If it was a track toy then, hell ya, it's worth every penny.

The DCT is fantastic... an amazing transmission that is worth every dollar... IF you want a DCT
I've had a DCT in one of my E92 M3's and my M4. Loved it in both applications and (this will be heresy for some) liked it more than the PDK in a 911 GTS I drove and almost purchased this summer. I'm getting a 6MT in my M2 but mainly because I want to go back to a MT for my next car... if I wanted the DCT experience again (which, by the way, is exceptional... my car is ONLY ever driven in manual mode), I wouldn't hesitate to pay the premium to add DCT to the car. So, it isn't whether it is "worth it"... it is... the real question is which transmission do you want and why. If you want instant upshifts, instant downshifts and lazy auto modes sometimes, then it's worth it. A DCT, driven properly in manual mode, can be every bit as fun as a traditional MT because of the crispness, power delivery and it is absolutely engaging (unless you drive in auto mode). It is also great in traffic. For me, I'm sticking with a MT because I haven't owned one since my C7 and E36 M3 track car and my wife wants another in the house too

Is it still engaging without the drive logic controller?
In the case of the M2 your just paying for a second clutch if you don't get the benefits of the controller hence why spend the money if you only get "half the toy.." ? I'll drive the M4 but the gearbox will have more functionality than what it will offer in the M2. On the flip side I'm hoping the MT will be just as good if not better then the 1M (assuming I go down the MT route) |

For the M4 6MT BMW M took the 1M tranny and improved it. So I wouldn't worry about that.

"Worth it" is as subjective as you can get...
And the opinions you're receiving are all over the board already, even from the uninformed who think its an automatic. For me? It's been worth it, albeit an expensive option. I've loved every DCT I've owned

I don't think its worth 3k if ur dead set on dct get it used as the first buyer will eat the cost. And there will be a lot of dct out there. Most will want 6mt. I've had both.

I'll still drive the DCT - I'm intrigued why people say it can be driven in "manual mode". Surely this just requires the driver to use paddles? Not the same as using a clutch peddle

Well, is it worth to spend €7.000,-- more on a MT?
Yes, in my country, the Netherlands, an M2 comes standard with the M-DCT, and the 6MT is an option for €7K !!! Of course due to taxes and CO2 emissions. Yes., I have owned a 1M, with a superb 6MT, the M2 6MT has evolved trough the 1M and the M3-4 to the best BMW MT ever, so no doubts about the technical and fun aspects. But is it worth another €7K, well, not IMHO, so I ordered the M2 with DCT, also I have driven the Cayman GTS with the fabulous PDK, the DCT will be no less in quality. |

I'm getting the MT for something different this time and not because I'm bored of the DCT. Be careful with the testosterone induced chest thumping from MT drivers... some use it as measure of their e-peen . I'm not discounting their views but there is often a lot of chest thumping when it comes to MT vs. DCT and/or some will base their view on a test drive and not having spent enough time with the car. I've owned both and both are fantastic... if a little different in their feel and approach. Find a DCT, spend an hour driving it in manual mode only... do all of the up/down shifting like you would a manual and I think you will find it enjoyable. You may still prefer a MT, lots do, but a DCT is not "unengaging" or "boring" like some claim when driven properly IMO. There are three places where a DCT is better... 1. At the track (if lap times matter) 2. In bad traffic 3. From a stop light... in even fast MT cars it's far more effort (and revving out) the car to beat the Civic next to you to the next light... if that matters. I suppose the MT is more "engaging" because it involves your left foot but that doesn't necessarily mean more fun. But, like Dabozo said above, MT's are slowly dying and won't exist, IMO, in 10 years so I'm going back to MT for a nostalgic romp at the track before you won't have the option.

In Australia manual is a no cost option... So you pay for dct but get manual instead...
I don't like the fact it doesn't have drivelogic controller I wonder without Drivelogic how different will it feel compare with zf8 gearbox
