California Exhaust Law

AB 1824 -- Fine for loud vehicle exhausts

Drivers in a vehicle or motorcycle with an excessively loud exhaust will be fined. Previously, they would have been cited with a “fix-it” ticket.

It is illegal to have any modified exhaust and stock exhaust louder than 95dB in California now!

http://www.thedrive.com/news/25799/c...ine-you-for-it

Please sign petition for all us Californians!!!

This isn't new. The only part that changed is that it's no longer a correctable violation. Base laws haven't changed. Also, if you pass the state referee test, the ticket gets thrown out. I did it not too long ago.

95 DB is a lot. As someone who lives in a high density area I don't find this unreasonable.

Washington has a similar law. I actually think it makes sense.

This is good. 95 dB is an insane amount.

When I was doing FSAE we designed our exhaust to the 110dBc limit, which was insanely loud without hearing protection.

This is a good law and I hope it's enforced with a maintained instrument. My biggest hope is that all the Harley riders get a nice talkin to.

I agree the fix it ticket for this was a joke. Fix it tickets are for your broken tail light or even forgot to put front plate on but putting on an exhaust louder than 95db is just selfish and childish. I see guys driving around with exhaust so loud they wear ear plugs themselves but do it to annoy others.

Not signing this and can't believe someone would start a petition for this. Obviously there are many other real issues in the world, but even keeping it to car stuff, a better petition would be to move up the smog exemption in California from 1976 to 1986 so some of us can import 25 year old classic cars into California. That would be cool.

Personally I would like a petition that makes the fast lane only for passing like in Europe. if you are not passing in the passing lane....ticket. Just move over when not passing. Stop making everyone pass you on the right.

But exhausts over 95db none of which truly be enforced until about 110 decibels really not there. : (

I've never quite understood the guys that ride with open pipes. I've got "steel wool" baffles in mine because 300+ miles of wind noise is bad enough. Having open pipes on top of that would just be deafening.

Bunch of snowflakes...this law needs to be refined in another way so it won't be abused by authority. I'm all for having sound regulations which is normal but this is and has already been abused by authority and the reasoning "due to street takeovers/racing" is absurd.

Canada is damn near socialist and they don't have any smog or ridiculous noise abatement tactics like this...this is just a cash grab for car enthusiasts.

It depends on the testing procedure. I don't own an OG M2 but have a well calibrated meter at home. If someone has an OG M2 with MPE that wants to find out, just lmk and we can easily test based on the test protocol.

It's usually held at an angle, a certain distance away, at some RPM/load. Id have to dig up the procedure to find out exactly what it is

There are like 6 people in all of Canada, and they don't go outside 11 months out of the year due to weather. I think smog and noise are the least of Canada's concern.

You may actually want super loud exhausts in Canada so you know your neighbor in a neighboring state is still alive

You're not joking. Go to China and you'll see why smog regulation is a must.

I lived in Japan for a while, right in the middle of Tokyo. The most annoying thing was that every other scooter had a huge JDM tailpipe on it, and you could hear the fart can noises all night long. 95db is more than enough, besides it's about the tone and the burbling not just volume.

I know you're trying to be funny, but here's a bit of Canada 101...

We have Provinces, not States.

Canada actually has about the same population as California - REGISTERED POPULATION that is @30-35M, however 90% of the population is concentrated into less than 10 urban centres.

Toronto gets less snow and higher average temperatures than Chicago, Buffalo, and pretty much all of the US North East.

GTA (Greater Toronto Area) population = 8+Million

Canada has the busiest highway in the world (Highway 401 in Toronto area) Google it. in fact, here http://livetrucking.com/this-north-a...-in-the-world/

So yeah, we don't like Harley's either! And cops can give you tickets for modified exhaust under the "officer's discretion" provision. Same for tinted windows. That's why we are all so nice! "Yes Officer, you have a nice day!"

oh, and we don't say "aboot", we say "about"...you just say "ABAAAAWT"

haha I definitely believe you, just the concentration of people in Los Angeles makes EVERY SINGLE road congested, not just the highway/freeway
