I've noticed, especially while driving at sunset, that the windshield seems to have a pitted appearance. Anybody else notice this? I've owned numerous vehicles and have not seen this before. Even after a thorough clean and polish it is present. And it is uniformly present over the entire windshield.

I have a bit of sandblasting on mine. I'm a touch under 2 years old and just hit 20k. It'll happen and yeah, you can see it when the sun is just right (wrong).

Here in Florida all insurance policies have to cover windshield replacement for no out of pocket cost. If I ever get a chip I'll be on the phone in a second.

I had 2 done on the M3 and it's amazing how nice a brand new windshield is....they degrade so slowly you don't notice it, but when it's all of a sudden perfect; wow.

I just changed my windshield out last week because it looked like specs of sand. Just go thru insurance it's covered with most policies.

Thanks! I'll have a go with the insurance company to see if I can get this replaced.

I remember when you could go years on a windshield without cracking or pitting but now even if you can avoid cracks it's impossible to avoid a fair amount of pitting annually. The 3 layer glass they use now is safer but not as durable. I'm kind of surprised in this age of technology we can't make a windshield that is both safe and durable.

This may be a dumb question but I was thinking about starting a thread until I saw this post.

Is it possible/smart to cover the windshield in PPF or is the clarity not good enough for that application? Wondering because it would be so much easier to remove a plastic film over the windshield and have it like new again.

there are windshield specific films but they do not last very long (less than a year) and scratch easily with repeated wipers use. They're not very popular due to cost and short longevity

No worries! They're marketed towards the exotics where windshields cost thousands and thousands of dollars and $500 for film starts to make sense. Whereas our cars an original OEM BMW windshield is about 400 MSRP
