A buddy of mine and I decided to go with a cost effective way to make the cluster white and stay lit without turning on the headlights. We simply just replaced the LED bulbs on the backside of the circuit board, and the result came out very satisfying. Check out the video below to see how it plays out.

For starters, we came across the thread below before we decided to start doing this project.

I'm just seeing 2 image files, not any video. You attach the wrong thing?

I'm not understanding how changing the LEDs from orange to white would allow them to stay on during the day (without the headlights turned on).....

If there's a way, I'm curious.......

Update: I CAN see the video now. I'd tried it on several devices earlier but can only see it as of this am. Thanks.

That's weird because I am able to see the video using the Bimmerpost app on my phone.

At first I thought I was only able to change the color, without making them lit the whole time. But they just stay lit after powering on which really surprised me.

Update 12/29:

After going through with my buddy again I finally figured out why my cluster can stay lit the whole time. He connected one of the terminals on the bulbs to the power source that's used to power on the onboard computer, thus making the cluster lit the whole time.

In that case, I wonder if they are still dimmable at night via the scroll wheel by the headlight switch.

The gauge cluster itself is no longer dimmable but I don't mind it at all because the brightness is just right.

Ahh, that makes a ton more sense now.

Any details on exactly what he did? I'm sure a lot of pre-LCI folks would like to give this a shot even with the stock orange LEDs.

Thanks.

I'll discuss with him to see if he's willing to share a step by step DIY on how it was done.

BR diagnostics has a solution where the dimming works as normal and backlight autmatically goes on full blast in the daytime
