This is becoming a swinging D party comparing the M2 to the M2C. If you were able to pick up either, congrats you got an amazing car. I bet if the 1M was developed with the S65 there would have been the same comparisons everyone is making with the M2 and the M2C. The M2 is the foundation for the M2C and models will always keep getting updgrades. The fact that you have an M car gets an applause from me no matter what. Do I wish I can get the M2C? of course, but i'll enjoy the M2 for now until i can decide what my next move is.

combine that with detune and you start to realize they put shackles on it not to step all over m3 ... this car should have been lighter than og m2 if it is labeled "competition"
Hehe... just to get your knickers in a twist.

Not much chance of competing with the M3 on track... the wheel base is similar (4.7 inches in it), with the M3/4 being less twitchy.

M3/4 is 80lbs lighter and almost 200lbs lighter than M2C.
Not to mention the optional CCBs or Titanium exhaust.
The heavier M2 with slightly shorter wheelbase puts more weight on the rear during initial acceleration from stand still.
Size is practically the same.... but the M3 is lighter.

M3 vs M2 (BMW USA)

Wheel base, length, width, height
M3: 110.7, 184.6, 73.9, 56.1
M2: 106.0, 176.2, 73.0, 55.5
Curb weight (bmw)
M3: 3575lbs
M2: 3655, (competition +55kg)

Acceleration
M3:
4.1sec manual transmission.
3.9sec dct transmission.

M2:
4.0sec manual transmission.
4.2sec automatic transmission.

(M2&M3 same gear ratios: 4.11, 2.32 manual)

Power:
M3: 425hp, 406ft/lbs
M2C: 405hp, 406ft/lbs

Top speed (both limited):
M3: 155mph
M2: 150mph

Having said all that, I LOVE the M2.
Great car for the price.
it's not that simple

show specific track with sector speeds for both cars, with the same conditions, tires, brakes, similar skill drivers etc.

compare them on short technical and high speed track.

You can make and argument on that for initial cost only. Replacement cost of the factory CCs is insane, plus I believe with heavy track use actually wear sooner than regular aftermarket steels.

True. Regardless, most are losing too much sleep over the weight issue. In reality I doubt any of use are tracking the cars to the total limit where the weight is going to make or break a track day. Extent of reduction I'm going to do is switch to an AA single exhaust.

The way I look at it is like this: it's something that you don't notice in any one bump in the weight, but if you combine all of the "little" weight increases over models and years and yet more models and years, you suddenly look back and think "wow - that's a lot of weight that's been added". It's the same thinking that justifies the few pounds of their own weight one might put on every year. It's never the individual weight increments, it's how they accumulate over time. And you definitely feel that weight (either as a human or in a car).

And it's not just about tracking and track days. It's every time you take the car out onto any kind of winding course - be it a track or some superb twisties in the mountains.

Agree with the first paragraph but not the second. 99% of people wouldn't be able to recognize a 150 lbs weight gain in a car on a road or track in a blind test.

OG M2 midpipe: 21.5lbs
OG M2 muffler: 24.78lbs

M2C downpipes (total weight of the two): 16.3lbs (8.4lbs difference compared to OG M2)

I don't have weight figures on M2C midpipe and muffler since BMW ETK hasn't released them yet but the following pics speak for themselves:

Such a simple exhaust which gives it a symphony sound.

OG M2 is a bargain. It is NOT 25k less of a car. IMO.

Referring to used hyper low mileage 2016/2017's. I wish I'd waited.

And agree...99% of the people will not notice 150lbs while driving. Especially since the 2c has more torque. Feels faster. 25k faster???

iv got a m135i and looking to upgrade to an m2 which i can pick up a 2017 model for like 1/3 cheaper then a m2c. From people who have owned both the m2 and m2c should i wait a couple years to purchase an m2c or is the m2 a worthy upgrade?

Im literally looking for a car to have more fun with in the bends (plus i can transfer all my engine mods to the OG m2)

Interesting view. The key question here is 'what is a real M-car?'. My definition is: a BMW model heavily modified by the BMW M division to be very performant, well capable on track while being usable as a DD on the road without too many compromises, and in final designed to give to a 'base' driver the feeling to drive a real race car (performances, engaging engine, noise, high-speed cornering, some occasional drifts and fun on a track,), while enabling a more experienced driver to make decent lap times on a track.

For having driven several times a M240i, I wouldn't call it a real M-car, even if its a great car with a terrific engine: it's too mundane, its brakes are too faint, its suspension is too soft, its exhaust noise is too quiet. You can even have it in x-drive version...

Oppositely, the OG M2 fits the definition perfectly.

Now, BMW purists could use more strict definitions of a M-car: a pure race car sold in sufficient quantity by BMW to make possible its homologation, or at least a track-oriented BMW with a big naturally-aspired engine (no turbo).

And I guess that a kid fan of Batman, its bat-car and other bat-gadgets, would define a real M-car as a BMW with M-mirrors, a M-hood, a M-engine, M-buttons, M-seats, a M-trunk, M-wheels, etc...

Despite being the largest weight increase, it probably affected the car the least in terms of handling since it is so low.

Thanks for the photo! And DCT is what, ~55 lbs? So ~3,435 lbs for an equivalent 6MT car (which mine is). Right around the BMW published curb weight, which I believe is 3,450 lbs.

Question for everyone here.

Can you notice a difference when a 150 lbs passenger sits in your car?
