2020 m340i to 2021 M2 Comp

Hey everyone,

I am looking to move from a 2020 m340i to a 2021 M2 comp. Needed some advice on which is the best used M2 comp model year to go for, and if there is anything that I need to look out for, when considering a few prospects? I currently have my eye on a 14,000 miles driven accident free M2 Comp, which is listed for 48K USD.

If it's a clean accident free car that hasn't been tracked to death then that is a very good price. If you want to flash tune then 2019 is the best year since they can be easily unlocked and flashed in a few minutes from home. Otherwise the year models are all pretty much the same. There was a limited special model with black and white seats.

Out of curiosity, why are you looking to change from an M340i to an M2 Comp?

I ask as I'm stuck on what to go for as my next car - I'm torn between either an M340i or an M2 Comp. What has made you want to switch?

There are really just a few months of the 2019 M2C that were unlockable over OBD from factory, if they haven't been updated since. Otherwise it would need a bench unlock like all the rest.

Currently I see more 2019s that need bench unlocking than not.
However this shouldn't be something to detract you from buying an M2C.

I drove the 2020 m340i for almost two years and dont get me wrong, that B58 game is strong! It has enough power and is even better at tech then the M2 comp.

However, when I test drove the M2 Comp, the sheer rawness of the actual M engine and the whole experience as a whole, was much more rewarding for me personally.

Also, I am at a life stage when I can use a 2 Door coupe as a daily for now, might not be able to do that 5 years from now, as the family grows.

Additionally, I want to take my car on track runs, and the handling + rawness of M2 comp just comes alive on the track.

Is there an easy way to check a 2019 M2C to see if it was updated or not? I took delivery in Sep 2018 and it was built in June 2018.

The best way is to check the software IDs in the DME.

If the bootloader (btld) says this:
btld_00005ba6_011_019_001 Then this can be unlocked over OBD.

If the btld says this:
btld_00005ba6_011_019_002 Then this is bench connection unlock only.

This applies to all F87 M2C and F80/82/83 built 06/2018 and afterwards.

Many programs read this, including esys, ISTA, INPA, Tool32, bm3, probably bimmerlink, etc.

Thanks. I have bimmerlink and bimmercode, so I'll see if I can find this in one of them.

That's interesting, I guess many cars got updated at the stealership. Fortunately my car is not one of them!

Neither is mine, but fortunately I can update my DME (and other 2019s) without losing the unlock.

I went from a m240i to M2 comp and your reasons for making the move are spot on and I don't think you will be disappointed

Other than the unlocked/locked issue I can’t think of any other model year specific issues. I’ve had zero issues with my ‘21.

$48k seems like a good deal for 14k miles.

MHD ENET OBD Adapter, download MHD app and run an unlock check. That will tell you if it’s locked or not.

$48K is a steal at that mileage. Most with same specs (clean title, etc.) are going for ~$10K more.

I'd definitely look more into why that's such a good price. F87 is such a great platform, only thing I would look out for is 1) top mounted intercooler on the S55 platform tends to leak coolant, but easy fix with replacement/upgrade; 2) like others said, whether or not car is tuned and therefore may void warranty (e.g. - crank hub)

For what it's worth, I went from a 335 (F30) -> M2C (F87). Reason behind it was that I wanted a better 'base' car that I could build into a track tool. Both very capable cars, but absolutely no ragrets.

Thanks for those pointers! I am definitely going to make sure that I check the intercooler.

I did check the car, its bone stock, except from some exterior mods like the splitter, side skirts and diffuser.

I too thought it was too good a deal, so did my check with BMW with the VIN and everything checks out. One more reason why I got a good price is because I stay in Toronto, Canada, and this is the only M2 in the market.

I decided to finally buy it! Honestly, looks and drives pretty sick. Its a beast for sure.

While I've never owned the m340i, its what the sales rep wanted to sell me. I wanted to test drive the M2, but they wouldn't unless I was going to buy it right then and there. Was a total bait-n-switch. I called ahead of time to setup the appointment and everything. They were like, sure come on in, but once I got there though, it was "sorry, have to keep the miles off." I was still early in my decision making process, so I wasn't going to commit, so they were like, how about a drive in an m340i? I wasn't interested, but then I was like, you know what, that sounds fun. I needed something to take my frustrations out on. You could say I pushed on that car quite hard. Might have even taken a couple thousand miles off the tires. Turns out though, I found it to be quite lively, with a good punch, and yes, updated on tech. Overall, a very good car. However it floated on the road, was a bit sedated. It's probably what an M5 was a few years back - having never owned one of those either. My story did end well - I finally got to drive the M2 at a BMW M Town Tour event, and the rest is history.
