Would you cross shop G87 M2 and i4 M50?

Spec'd out pricing is roughly similar (CAD market).

M2 as something to purchase and keep while i4 probably lease. I understand both would have amazing power, handling and quality as daily drivers (2 vs 4 door makes little difference to me).

i4 being electric feels good, but I can't imagine a better feeling than stepping in and out of an M daily. Then there's the value of an ICE in 5-8 years…

I'd welcome thoughts, feelings and comments - technical and spiritual!

I mean you might as well cross shop a Cayman GTS, a g80 and g82 m3/4, an x3m, a used m5, a Tesla model 3 performance, a model S, and the Ford mustang EV while you're at it. Also why not the new c63 AMG hybrid? Base taycan too.

I think you’re saying I’m comparing apples to oranges and fair that there are many vehicles to consider, but no, I wouldn't be cross shopping all those.

M2/i4 M50 can be spec'd under 100k incl. taxes.

Cayman GTS starts at 103k and taycan 130k.

Those are pretty different classes of cars to cross shop. For me I wouldn't be thinking of those two as an "or" scenario. They're more complimentary vehicles (and I say that as an M2 owner who has a deposit on an i4...).

Agreed…

I'm on my 5th EV as a daily and it completely supplements the ownership of my M2

Ha, this thread is exactly my quandary! I have driven an m235i suspension modded mega spec manual for last 5 years, previous to this a tuned 335i (E92) and its either keep the M235i (late 2015 46k mikes), go for an i4 M50 lease under the company car scheme, or put money towards an M2, more likely M2 Comp (F series rather than G obviously). We've just bought a new family car a few months ago, moving from an F11 530d to a VW Touareg Black Edition, so family duties covered there.

The appeal of the i4 is a cheap tax free lease at around £580 pm. The M235i has had a large bill revently, so perhaps owning an 8.5 year old car is starting to cost me more money. The i4 is all in inc tyres, servicing and insurance! But I've always wanted to own an M car.

I test drove an i4 M50 for 3 days last week and it is way better than the Polestar 2 LRDM Performance in terms of finished product and refinement and throttle response. Suspension on the Polestar much more tawt and engaging, but would be tiring as a daily.

Power and delivery on the i4 m50 is just brilliant! Headup display brilliant. Range was not great though. On 19inch wheels and -5 degrees here in the UK, i was getting only 65 miles from 30% of battery.

I drove an i4 M50 and was really impressed. If I didn't want something trackable (and the i4 really isn't), it would be on my list. A VERY competent and fast vehicle.

Like many in my older area we don’t have a garage. So any EV is out of the question.

Yeah from my experience with it for 3 days, it isnt a locked down sports car, the rear end felt more squidgy than my m235i (has subframe poly bushes) but that might be more to do with the i4 having 19 wheels rather than 20. Always wanted an M2, but i4 would make more financial sense perhaps as a daily given the increased work mileage I do.

You really should try one. The instantaneous full torque is like driving a video game.

I’d rather drive a car than a video game. 🤣

As a petrol head, I can't imagine anything worse than driving a sporty car that feels like a video game.

It's still fun, and I still have my F87 to go back to the ICE experience.

Any cars can be cross shopped...but there are very few people cross shopping an M2 and i4. They aren't opposites but damn close.

You can easily run 220 to driveway, and you probably have 110 outside now

You can definitely charge an electric car outside without a garage

It’s not out of the question, it’s something you adapt to

Easy way to get things stolen or vandalized. Not a low risk alternative.

When you have to run a 50 foot extension cord it is as bad as it sounds.

Only one family in my area has an EV. And they go to charging stations to get it charged. They do not charge in their driveway.

A 50 foot extension cord…

How about conduit underground

Where there is a will there is a way ❕
