550 miles in to Euro Delivery....loud knocking from motor that corresponds to RPM

OTP holding for roadside assistance at the moment....halfway through our ED vacation. Car will likely get towed to Renocar in Prague where we just arrived for a two day stay.

As we rolled in to Prague from our stay in Hallstatt/Salzburg/Vienna, we started hearing a knocking sound that is more than injectors and lifters makes. Increases/decreases with engine rpm. Loudness increases under load/unload. Absolutely no fluids leaking or errors in check control or on cluster. Crazy!

Anyone experience this and if so, what was the issue?

This trip is with my wife so I've had it in sport+ for a total of 3 miles so far.....there is a time and a place for that stuff and this trip is not it. Max rpm 5k and Max speed roughly 105 for a total of 4 overtakes on highways so far.....

I had planned 4 laps during tf on Sept 4 but that's probably out the window now.

Update Sept 1 9pm Prague time:
Heading back to Cartec BMW in Prague Monday morning at 7am to hopefully coordinate BMWNA/EuroDelivery (I hope someone is there on Labor Day), BMW Welt, and Cartec service (hopefully someone speaks English there as I certainly do not know Czech!)

I'll take some comprehensive videos and post them in case this eventually helps someone else out in the future.

Update Sept 2 11:45am Prague time:
Cartec BMW service writer spoke very good English and was very helpful. they started the car and the knocking noise startled them. Tech put it up on a lift and inspected underside - all clear. Tech assumed the noise was bottom of motor and that it was mechanical and not good. I'm hoping they can pull the oil filter housing cap and inspect for any metal shavings. I'll post a video and a couple of pics when I have a chance to upload to youtube.

I've called BMW Welt three times since they opened today. They seem to be aware of my situation but I am not hearing back from them with any solutions or further instructions. 7 hours ahead of Chicago time so no one is at the local dealer yet. BMWNA/BMW Euro Delivery is probably out for today since it is Labor Day.

This certainly has not totally ruined our ability to enjoy our vacation....yet....but I've now spent 10+ hours trying to contact the appropriate people between Europe roadside assistance, US roadside assistance, Chicagoland dealer, BMWNA, BMW Munich, and the local dealer here in Prague. Starting to get annoyed.

So sorry to hear this man! We are at roughly the same mileage and did the passes yesterday in sport and sport+ and so far have been lucky, but will definitely take it easy the next few days to try and stay that way. Hope you get everything sorted out and keep us updated.

Trip is cut short.....heading home from Prague this morning. I'll likely be posting something more comprehensive but the motor is done at 557 miles (likely much earlier). Looks and sounds to me like it spun a rod bearing.

Oil filter housing pic attached.

So this sounds really similar to what I was hearing on my F80 - I started a thread on that earlier this week and the shop foreman said my S55 might be “toast”. My engine has ~25,000 miles and had never had a hiccup, and has never been modded in any way.

I had the same exact fact pattern - I described the noise as “ticking” but it was definitely prominent. Got louder under load/higher RPMs. I’m traveling for work and haven’t heard much although I know the regional field engineer examined my car on Friday. I’m supposed to get an update tomorrow.

The initial “hope” for my car was that I had a bad lifter...then the conversation quickly turned to whether I’ve ever modded the car, which again I haven’t...and that there’s significant metal and shavings in the oil pan.

I will let you know if I hear more....and sorry this happened to you on your ED...

EDIT - I see you’re in Chicago. My car is currently at Bill Jacobs...might be interesting to compare notes.

so sorry this happened to you. this had got to be the worst. let us know what it ended up being and what BMW is doing for you. at the very least they owe you a new car, if you even want one at this point.

I have a lot to share based on the last 60 hours....how much I share and the tone in which I deliver it will be dictated by BMWNA and local dealer response. I'm not sure what I want yet but I'll develop those thoughts on the flight home today and it will be a process for sure. I'm not a very aggressive person and am often too forgiving but I had to do a lot of legwork on my own to manage this situation over the last 60 hours. The fact it happened Saturday evening, and therefore spanned a Sunday and Labor Day Monday, certainly made things more difficult.

Man I feel you. I hope for all the best from here on out with the situation.

Please give us details on how you sorted everything on your own once you gather your thoughts.

Good luck.

I feel much the same way to be honest - I too am waiting to see what the diagnosis is (it really feels like they’re looking for a way to somehow pin this on me) and what the next steps are....

Full thoughts will be based upon the final outcome. We shall see.

This doesn't sound great... I did ED back in April. Had to schedule my 1200 mi service there and it happened to align with the German Labor day. Had a really stressful situation getting in contact with the right people to get it done. Can't imagine how I'd have dealt with it in your situation. Good luck

You need to look at the filter itself not really the housing and see if there is any metal pieces stuck to the paper oil filter.

Prague dealer confirmed metal in the filter. They texted me a pic but it's hard to make heads or tails of.

Do you think BMW will replace your vehicle with a brand new car? Since you took delivery already can you start the Lemon Law process? But technically its not in the U.S. but you did take delivery. I think minimum of 30 days in the shop and you start the Lemon Law process. Hopefully BMW will take care of you and you dont need to resort to that.

Where is your M2c at now, at the dealer? Will it be towed to the Welt for them to handle it? Curious how all this will be handled.

This is freaky. Sorry to hear. I get deja vu reading this.

Sort of reminds me of how the rod bearing issues started to surface on the e46 M3’s. BMW didn’t really own up to it until several years later. In fact, they downplayed the issue before the actual recall came out, which pointed out the affected cars. Years later, it turned out that even those not affected by the recall still had issues with rod bearings. It’s safe to say that all e46 M3’s were affected. It was a weak area.

Aside from Vanos issues, e46 M3’s were and still are notorious for rod bearing related failures. Speaking of the vanos; that was never addressed by BMW.

Not only that e46 M3's had sub-frame issues cracking the sheet metal under the vehicle where the sub-frame is mounted. There are reinforcement kids available for those cars.

Really sad that BMW does not stand behind their cars when engineering, manufacturing issues arise.

I own a Toyota product as well. A 2009 4runner, and Toyota sent me a letter in the mail for rear window spontaneous shattering 2 years ago. Not a wide spread issue at all since it was hardly reported on the 4runner forums. Long story short Toyota N.A. sent me a $800 check for the window replacement. This is what I call standing behind your product. BMW has lots to learn!

I would expect and anticipate that BMW will make the OP "whole" again, at least in regard to the actual car itself. They will either give him a new engine, or a completely new car (that's what I would want anyway)...

But can they save their customer relationship with the OP? the fact that the joy from the new car purchase, via ED no less, ended with a broken motor? That he had to cut his vacation short, and instead of enjoying the car and whatever else he had planned, dealt with the stress and disappointment with the last couple of days?

I hope they at least try and address everything in the "intangible" bucket...

I'm torn here between wanting the car that at least has *some* memories attached to it from Europe vs. a replacement. The issue with the car that has memories attached is that it will have had a motor replacement at 557miles on the odo.

I never sell my cars until they are 10 years old with at least 150k miles on the clock but which car will have better overall resale value? I think a new one with no motor replacement....no?

I also never had a chance to take the European trinkets like warning triangle and first aid kid. I would also want the plates as a memory.

I think you will get varying opinions on this front - I would do whatever you think is best, obviously depending on what options they give you. I really think you can sort of "transfer" the memories to a car that didn't get a heart replacement at 550 miles, but that's just me.

Call me crazy, but I'm planning to do Euro Delivery next summer and if this happened to me I'd want them to give me the next car off the line! I realize that's not feasible with options and transportation times, but I'd sincerely hope they would take care of you! Sorry about your trip! Hope it works out for you.
