You fill a car with petrol therefore you care how much petrol it uses. Luxury in itself is not having to do that. Either you combat that with a bigger fuel tank or better efficiency.
Love all of you who pretend to not care. I get your point. But you DO care. If you had 100mpg you'd much prefer that than 9mpg. |

....this caught me out, you have to wait a couple of seconds after you see the "oil can" symbol, without pressing BC button, then the mileage display changes to the temp display.
If you're impatient (like me obviously) you'll miss it.. |

It's just that DCT has higher top gear and is programmed to shuffle up gears as quick as possible to do well on mpg tests so it gets better test mpg. At the same rpm & same speed DCT will do less mpg, simple physics. |

DCT does get better fuel economy in real life driving and would with the exact same gearing. The manual shift is by far the dominating factor. |

It is possible to drive a manual transmission for excellent efficiency. On old Saab cars (90's) there was a shift light, if you followed that light you would get the best mileage. The process was to maintain the lowest speed with the tallest gear (40 mph in 5th gear), you could get crazy mpg. The problem is behavior modification and trying to restrain oneself from wanting to hooligan or act like an Andretti while driving. A couple years ago some guys invented hypermiling and could get unreal mpg with a manual transmission.

A quick google shows the average DCT has twice the loss of a manual box - circa 8% v 4%, so it is significant. A traditional epicyclic auto is about 13%. DCT overcomes its power loss disadvantage by shifting quickly into high gears when humans are lazy and don't like to change gear so much! DCT wins on mpg because it removes the "human factor" This really benefits mostly on the town stop/start driving cycle test. At constant speed, where top gears are the same, a manual will do more MPG. Last edited by doughboy; 12-13-2018 at 05:27 AM.. |

Meanwhile i switched to digital speedo instead of oil temp. I use Bimmerlink to have the exhaust valves open all the time either way so this also tells me the exact oil-, transmission- and motor temp and a few more values I am interested in 👍🏼

Because this topic came back from the dead... While I don't pay much attention to gas mileage in this car, I do know that out of 30+ new cars, the M2c had, by far, the biggest improvement in MPG as it's broken in.
Everything felt super tight for at least 1,000 miles, and the 15-19 mpg tanks reflected that. I'm now at 4,800miles, and, while I drive and rev the snot out of it on a daily basis, I can't recall the last time I dipped below 20. Last tank: 22 |

yeah, i get my reserve warning at 1/4 tank so it's 10 gallon fill ups every 150-160 miles. I don't mind MPG as much as the tiny tank/range.

any reason to buy the 80 dollar OBD device over the 32 dollar one?

All that stuff is superfluous tat when you enjoy driving the car. This morning had a 50 mile back road sunrise blast to work, A/C off, radio off, I drive display off, window's down. No pointless gadgets required. |
