Automobile Magazine has announced their 2019 Automobile All-Stars Winners and the M2 Competition has been honored [read M2 article].

Intro to the competition:

"There are those who breathlessly dissect numbers, narrow the focus, or decide to revisit the same old models when contemplating what they believe to be the best car (or cars) of the year. That’s not us. Instead, during our annual All-Stars event, we set out to simply tell you which vehicles left us breathless and why.

Throughout each year, we’re constantly evaluating the best in breed. Everything from mainstream models to the world’s most mind-blowing supercars can get the nod to join the All-Stars fray, and just being asked to be a part of the field is an accomplishment. This isn’t an all-inclusive group, but it’s a wildly diverse one, meant to represent the most aspirational, attainable, and otherwise exceptional offerings of the past calendar year.

Although we try to secure for our evaluation an example of everything we think has All-Stars potential, it’s not always possible. Sometimes an automaker won’t let a car out to play (hello, Tesla Model 3) or timing can interfere (we’ll see you next year, BMW Z4 and 8 Series). The ones that do show up are subjected to several days of driving, on track and off. For our 2019 event, we shifted our venue from Las Vegas to the Streets of Willow road course at Willow Springs International Motorsports Park about an hour north of Los Angeles. Along with a challenging new road route near the facility, we put this year’s 24 contenders—you can view all the contenders here—through one of the most rigorous events in Automobile history.

Whittling down a stellar field to seven standouts was far from easy, and as always, there were some surprises. But it’s all part of the process, and we wouldn’t want it any other way. Because in the end, it’s about the year’s greatest cars—and what makes them so special."

Winner - BMW M2 Competition:

"Sometimes, you know a car is going to fare well at All-Stars just by watching our editors’ faces as they climb out of it. By midafternoon on day one at the track, as many of us got our first-ever taste of the new M2 Competition, the collective grin on Team Automobile’s mug stretched across the Antelope Valley from Willow Springs all the way to Palmdale. We still had days of driving to go, but already it was clear: BMW’s brilliant new M2 was a shoo-in." Read the rest of the full review at: https://www.automobilemag.com/news/2...-stars-winner/

This is exactly how a sports car is measured. Yes, numbers on a track, lap times, straight line performance gives you an idea how the car performs against others in the same scenario but the true measure is how much you enjoy driving it.

It is nice to see the M2C recognized once again. He did mention a few things in the review that didn't seem correct.

"...but thanks to reworked springs and dampers and upgraded structural bracing up front, the suspension is even more playful and precise than the 2018 M2’s"

While many have noted that the M2C has more precise steering, I don't think anyone has really proven that the springs and dampers are different or tuned differently.

“Very little understeer, really strong midcorner grip, and all the adjustability you could ever want."

I don't know what "adjustability" they are talking about with the suspension.

"You’ll spy four seats inside, but don’t expect to travel with three adult passengers for more than a few miles. In practice, this is a two-seater with a back seat for stuff"

While I wouldn't want to sit in the back of an M2 all day long, I am 5'11" and I have ridden in the back of an M2. It is not that bad at all for short casual riding around town. The back seats have much more space than Mustangs, Camaros etc.

I'm not trying to be negative, just accurate.

Exactly, this is the reason I hate seeing comments that say "its slower than a tesla model __" or "4 seconds to 60 is too slow" on any post, the 0-60 war between manufacturers has literally made everyone forget about what truly matters when driving a car, the way it handles and how happy it makes the driver.

The M2 Competition is a real hero among modern M Cars.

Quoted is accurate. Jethro is talking about the adjustability in a corner (giving you options to play or keeping it tidy), not height adjustability.

I got a spot for new G80 M3 but if I can get a M2CS I probably wouldn't be able to resist

Understandable, I think it will be epic and I think it might sell better than the M3CS given that it's smaller.
Those M2 residuals though . . Terrible

The issue there might be the cost of the CS. No doubt its nice but is it worth an extra 50% price increase on a car that's already $70k? Thats putting it right into the entry level 911 price range. I think if the incremental cost increase for the M2 CS is a tad more modest then it should do alright.

I may be IN on the CS. if it truly comes in manual and has better colors than silver and other normal colors.
but then again there is the 2020 gt4 coming soon

Adjustability in this case refers to the ability to adjust the angle of the car during a corner. In normal cars, you steer into a turn and the chassis/suspension/differential/etc setup makes it so the car is stable and planted. This is safe but also boring to an experienced driver. In a Jetta or C class or something, you enter a corner and the car takes a certain angle and that's kind of it, step on the gas or the brakes and it tries to stay in that same angle for safety. A car that is 'adjustable' is easier to rotate with the brakes or the throttle.

The steering wheel is the same part number as the M2 but they are different sizes when measured. This makes me think that the suspension may have the same part numbers but also be re tuned.

Take it from someone who used to work there, the majority of Tesla fanboys fit this mold.

The reason being because they are tech geeks concerned with features and self-driving tech and not real car enthusiasts. Nothing wrong with that but it's cringeworthy when they gloat that their numb spaceship is a better car than Porsches and Bimmers.
