Picking up my M2 soon. The dealer will mount 4 aggressive all-season tires for me because I live in the frozen tundra of Upstate NY.

Regardless of whether I get the Contis or Michelins, I'm taking the stock tires home with me.

I may bring one of my kids with me, so here is the question:

Will two tires fit in that puny trunk?

Will three tires fit in the back seat?

An affirmative answer to either question would make my life a bit easier.

Anyone?

*Four * tires fit in back seat. Pack them life saver roll style (and make sure they don't roll forward when braking ) or you can lay them flat in pairs on each side. I prefer the latter.

Put the child up front if old enough.

Track box and other items in the trunk.

If you are trying to put tires in the trunk in order to have a rear seat occupant , you can likely just get two in.

That's actually a harder way to carry them. Low clearance on the unibody between the trunk and the seat space.

Much easier to just toss them across the back seats, plus you retain your trunk space.

True Story!

2045 while the tires can fit with the rear seat folded down, it's actually much easier to fit them with the seatback UP.


Fit and transport-


This is especially the case with wheels that have tires mounted on them. With the seatback UP, there is less interference with the rear side bolster/armrests and as well as with the back of the front seats as @premature Apex indicated. The bottom set of wheels and tires fit snugly sometimes so the additional clearance is better and they also sit lower in the vehicle making them less likely to tip forward. The second set on top I usually lean back towards the rear of the car.. there is a little more room up top so you can position them a little.


Interior seat leather-

I started out by laying wheels and tires on the seatback, thinking it would be better for the interior seat surfaces. Instead i found that placing a thin blanket on the seat works or even better is to buy tire totes. The tire totes actually slip a bit compared to the rubber and they also of course keep nasty brake marks from getting on the seats.

Vision -

You can see out of the rear of the vehicle better with the tires lower by keeping the seat back up as well. The tires are not higher than the rear seat itself. Full visibility is available to the rear. You can also pack some more soft items on top or inside the wheels/tires and there is also more room to place items behind the front seats when the seat back is up.

Noise -

Finally ,there's also a lot better isolation of road noise (drone ?) with the rear seat up.

@JackieChiles just for you. This took me a mere 8 minutes to load and unload.



First wheel in. Usually helps if doing this from the passenger side.


Second wheel on bottom to get the base set.

Then add the two on top. Easy peasy.

This is in a 1M interior. The M2 should fit the same.

I actually would fold the rear seats down just in case - but you shouldn't have any issues!

It's all but impossible to do.

First off, the stack then blocks the rear visibility.

Secondly, it's very hard to fit the last two tires in through the doors to get them stacked. As they don't t fit through the trunk.

Just in case what? What benefit would having the seats folded down provide?

I've been packing wheels and tires in my car since 2011 and I can tell you I've tried several different ways....

This is why I presented specific steps as to how to even place the wheels and tires in the car. Granted.. Placing the bottom wheels in the car is much easier with the back seat down... but stack height becomes an issue! One needs to hold the wheels vertically and squeeze them through the door opening. It's very important to place the bottom wheels in first and then the top two wheels on top. It may help to place one bottom wheel on the driver side and then slightly lift it before placing the second bottom wheel in so they fit in together to make the bottom row.

If you place two wheels vertically on the driver side first.. you will likely have difficulty getting the passenger side bottom wheel in. If you place both wheels in the car from the passenger side first.. it's a lot harder to squeeze the fourth wheel in from the driver side as the seat pass through isn't available.

When the seat back is down.,.. It's also harder to lift the wheels up HIGHER to get them up and over and on top of the seatback. Visibility to the rear is blocked.. and a rear wheel could literally shift and potentially hit the driver or passenger rear headrest since it's up higher....

I'm not trying to pile on here.. but I can't think of any reason TO put the back seat down. I can pack a track box with a full jack in the trunk. Other tools in the trunk and/or behind the seats or leave that area for room to stash stuff if on a long drive.

Aside from wanting to just haul four loose tires without wheels ( by putting two tires in from the back and two on the rear seatback with the seat down ) in a manner that will prevent shifting... I'm definitely curious as why you would prefer the seat down....?

I understand FULLY. If you are placing tires in the car without covers (or even with covers on) then a thin blanket or sheet across the seats underneath really helps. It also helps keep any wheel dust from the wheels from getting onto the leather as well. note : A thick blanket like a moving blanket is probably going to interfere with getting them to lay flat.

I would have placed the blanket I use in the car for the photos as well, but I literally went to the garage and moved all the wheels into and then back out of the car *and* made that post in under 15 minutes before heading to work..

For anyone that does this more than once a year or so.. the tire totes are really a big help. This reminds me that I need two more sets of them..

Yep, because the interior of the 1M and M2 are nearly IDENTICAL from the dash backwards.

The front seats are the same.
The interior armrest is slightly updated and slides on the M2.
The rear seats and seat-backs are the same.

The handles to drop the rear seat backs from the trunk are the same.

The only major difference I can discern between the 1M and the M2 rear trunk opening is the taillight pocket areas - there is more room in the M2 due to the decklid design.

Why all seasons and not real, proper winter tires? Upstate NY gets cold and snowy enough to need them and A/S is just putting yourself at risk.

1er to 2er interior may be the same but tire diameters are different betweennthe 1 and 2. 4wheels in a 1er is relatively easy. 2 M2 wheels is easy, 4 is more like tetris. would like to see pictures of that before i believe it.

Several reasons.

I have no intention of driving his car when the roads have much more than a dusting of snow. I've got a winter beater for that.

Snows were very hard to find in the appropriate sizes.

I've used Blizzaks before, and love them, but that was on the AWD car I drove all winter. I am presuming that the all seasons will be generally more fun to drive on except where there is standing snow, which I hope is not a factor.

There are a couple of other reasons that I can't recall right now, because I'm so excited to be picking up the car tomorrow!

If you do the math you'll see the best way to stack them is to put the rears on top of each other and then the same for the fronts. The reason is the diameter of a rear wheel/tire is slightly larger than the front by approximately 1/2". Stacking the rears together guarantees you'll use up the least amount of lateral space required. If things are still a bit too tight you can move the front wheels slightly forward so that they are offset. Or as stated before you can load them all vertically, you can place one in the trunk. Hell you can put one in the front passenger seat. Point is is totally doable.

Front: 245/35 19, overall diameter approx 654mm
Rear: 265/35 19, overall diameter approx 668mm
