I've been running BM3 stage2 tune for about 2-3 weeks(installing my DP and FMIC tomorrow). 98% of the driving has been around town keeping it off boost, occasionally revving it out for a moment, no issues.

Ok kool,I personally don’t care for the burbles like most so I will perhaps have AA tune the burbles out. I heard that the stock cat gets very very hot under the hood so this was also a concern.

Without a downpipe that’s stage 1. You guys realize the calibration actually changes because the flow of the engine changes right? It’s not like some magical slider that tuners do in order to add more power. There’s actually boost control models and when you don’t have the correct hardware you’re opening yourself up experience lots of problems. Run the right tune for your hardware, and if you want to be loud while decelerating you’re gonna need a downpipe so you don’t burn down your car.

I have no desire to run loud. I get what you are saying especially with boost control and flow. These are some of the things I was wondering about and if in the long run is harm being done to the motor via heat ,afr,s plus timing advance. Will running a stage 2 tune with the dp be a serious detriment. That was my concern.
There appears to be a few guys still using stage 2 tunes with cats still on. No one seems to have reported any failures as yet. Again I understand what you are saying.

Then why run the incorrect tune? From the tuner side of things, it drives me insane when customers run a different tune than what is recommended for their hardware, there’s hundreds of changes done in the calibration to account for that down pipe.

lol "there’s hundreds of changes done in the calibration to account for that down pipe."

no. Have you even looked at the actual tables of a M2 ROM ver?

My comment was more directed towards the changes needed for our tunes in the VAG world. Point was more to run the correct tune for the correct hardware.

But to answer your question I haven't even began looking through the FR to compare to the implementation that VAG does on MEx17 ECU's, trying to resist port flashing until my bflash arrives so I can make a boot backup first.

If you find a FR for MEVD172G, or especially the M2 MEVD172G rom versions which are entirely different from regular EWG's please PM me.

It's going to be hard fetched finding a FR for the MEVD172 period that is production.

What's the point of making a boot backup on your DME? BMW knows. You can easily flash the BTLD, and Program / calibration data to factory spec via ESYS anyways. Obviously you won't be able to revert EEPROM data... and from what I'm aware of, most tools out there like KESS/KTAG aren't able to R/W EEPROM anyways.

Will let you know, I have a MEVD17 BMW FR that a friend shared with me, just says MEVD17.2 N55 not G. So I'll reach out and try and find one specific for G.

Back up is not for warranty, it's that I will want to implement map flashing into my own tool, I also don't have the BMW plugins for CMD or KESS, only have a custom standalone port unlock tool and flasher. Also want to have as many flashes as possible before I have to do a restore. And BSL reads and writes E2P no problem with these.

Yeah that FR is the widly available one. That one is for early prod E series N55. The concepts around certain topics apply to most PWG roms, but newer PWG roms along with EWG / M2 are quite different.

I'm sure you will be able to work out the differences once you have an A2L or XDF in front of you.

N54 here but sounds like similar situation. I spoke with MHD and they said running stage 2 with stock cats is okay if you don’t drive it too hard. Sounds iffy to me but sounds fine for driving around town
