Tire/weird noise?
Hi everyone,
Recently swapped the stock Continental tires for Pilot Sport 4s and have noticed that at exactly 3-4mph I get a noticeable "whomp whomp whomp" kind of sound, seemingly from the back of the car but thats difficult to determine. I shot a quick video to get the sound. I can't be certain about when I started hearing it, so it might not be the tires at all. I'm posting here to see if anyone has a similar experience before I put the car on jack stands. Thanks! Last edited by M2OG; 07-08-2017 at 02:32 PM.. |

Ugh
Assuming you have a torque wrench, the simplest thing to do is to loosen the lug nuts and then re-torque them, in a crisscross pattern of course Even if you don't, as long as you have a lug wrench to loosen them with, try re-tightening them (crisscross pattern) and see if that helps - then go get them torqued to spec. You might just have a bad tire or they didn't balance it as well - but the noise sounded weird. Good luck and let us know the outcome!

I did the same swap, so happy I did. I have not experienced this at all. I would take the wheels off and then retorque them, its possible the sidewall is not entirely true and its causing that wobble sound so if torquing does not work I would take it back to the tire dealer and have them examine it closer. This is a sound you get with large offload tires but probably should not be common in a street tire. I would torque and then drive them for a while and then check them again.

I should note. I did bump up to 255f and 275r. But I can't imagine that being the issue. I'll report back once I have a chance to investigate further. Thanks for the reply's, I would never have thought to even need to check the torque on the wheels.

Might want to take a close look a the clearance of the tires and see if the inside of the tire is lightly rubbing against anything. I decided to stay with the stock size to be on the safe side. My guess is something is lightly rubbing on yours. Let us know how what it ends up being.

yeah I agree. I did check yesterday from under the vehicle but didn't see anything remotely close to the tires. The plan is to get it on ramps and really poke around.

So a little update. I climbed under the car again in better light and there is zero chance that the tires are rubbing on the struts as there is at least 1.5 inches clearance.
I'm starting to suspect the differential |

Little update. Re-tourqing the wheels did nothing so I brought the car into the dealer. The service advisor, shop foreman and tech all agree the sound is not normal and have spent the day trying to diagnose it with zero success. Next is a call into BMW.

Thanks for posting and for the updates. This will definitely be useful when I take mine in. Is yours a 2017?

The noise has been isolated to the left rear. Tomorrow a new wheel bearing will be installed as it's the most suspect culprit.
Yes mine is a 2017. Took delivery in January and have approximate 3500 miles on the car. |

Please see my recent posts in the maintenance, oil, etc... section, topic 1200 mile service. What oil did they list on your service invoice?

I'd push for a new diff...especially if you've put some miles on the car since the 1200 mile service. |
