Where was your M Perf spoiler installed? Was it ordered with the car?

My M Performance carbon spoiler was installed at the port and it's attached with betalink. The biggest giveaway that any part is attached with betalink is

a) it's completely flush with the surface. 3M tape will have a 1/16 gap (width of tape)

b) if you get your fingernail on an edge and try to flex it upward, and it doesn't budge, it's likely betalink. 3M tape will flex up and down

@buckybadger I did this 2 months ago. Carefully take the spoiler off. Use 3M adhesive remover and the tape/glue was off in 20min. Then cleaned well. Used 3M adhesive promoter to area marked out with tape to make sure the spoiler goes on perfectly. Then 3M tape on the spoiler. I put it out in the sun for the rest of the day. Was only about 70 degrees at the time. And I can vouch it is on solidly. It doesn't even wiggle.

No, I installed the M Performance using the same 3M VHB. I didn’t use Betalink because I wanted it to be easy to remove in case I decided to get a different style.

Ah, mine was ordered with the car (I didn't spec it, alas). Since it was installed at port, I am going to assume it's on there for life. Really don't want to destroy the paint just for a spoiler change.

It is possible to remove betalink, or at least get the remnants flat enough that you can mount a new spoiler. Although there's always a risk.

Maybe for the CS spoiler I need to buy the part above?

The second link is 3M Molding Tape that is pre-cut to match the spoiler. The 3M tape can be purchased in different widths and thickness.

For example...

may also want to use this but ONLY where the spoiler will cover it.

There are two types of Betalink K1 & K2. The one part and two part. I don't have experience but have been told 2 part is forever and requires the mixing gun/nozzel.

I used double sided 3M tape not betalink for my M Perf CS spoiler on my 2020. Removed it from that Comp, using fishing line and adhesive remover and transferred it to my newer '21.
It's a PIA removing tape, but really not as bad or hard as some would lead you to think. The 3M holds very well even at high speeds, and Ive had no loss of adhesion. My BMW dealer also only uses 3M.

From my understanding, the port uses K1 for spoilers.

Can confirm that they only use K1 for port installs; had a hand in providing feedback for the port install instructions, or at least for Canadian vehicles.

It's not fine. Use betalink!

I'm pretty sure the tape is fine for 99% of applications if the surface is prepped correctly and it's applied carefully.

Only in ideal climates. Freeze thaw will eventually wear out the 3M tape. Even without that, over time the tape will lose its strength especially as it's subjected to the elements.

There is a reason BMW uses and recommends betalink.

But BMW does not use Betalink for the stock lip spoiler that comes on the car from the factory. They must not care about those just falling off.

Let's not argue over something so silly - any spoiler that's applied with 3M tape OR betalink is not going to fall off if properly applied. It is mostly a decorative piece and doesn't create near the downforce necessary to unbond it no matter what the method. BMW recommends a lot of things for a lot of different reasons, that doesn't mean it has to be done that way.

OP
I too am in the same predicament. I bought a high kick PSM but am swapping it out for the less aggressive CS. As far as install, removing my factory M2C spoiler was not hard. Painters tape, trim tools, and patience. And then I carefully used an adhesive removal wheel on my drill.

Hi speedsnice,

I hope you are doing well. Thanks for all your tips with the installation.

Quick question, please let me know which 3M VHB tape did you use for the M2 CS spoiler? There are quite a few 3M VHB tape versions, so trying to figure out.

I found the product on the website below:

https://www.3m.com/3M/en_US/p/c/tape.../i/automotive/

Please let me know the website/shop where you purchased the product for your application.

Thanks!
