Need quick advise on 3k off MSRP with...

BIMMERPOST
     Featured on BIMMERPOST.com
Hello all,

I recently placed a special build order and placed a deposit for a new 2020 M2, which has a build week at the end of July. That means I'll have the car in September. Also the dealer said If i back out, my deposit is returned when they sell the car, is that fair or makes sense? Should I argue if I back out?

BUT, my local dealer is offering me $3,000 off MSRP on a 2020 M2 with my ideal build. The catch is the car has 95 miles on the odometer from test drives and I am worried about people breaking the rules of the "break in period".

Please let me know If I should secure this deal or if it is not worth it with 95 miles on the car.

Thanks!

It’s most likely 95 miles of not even letting the engine come up to temperature before pounding on it. Look at some of the test drives of M2 Competition’s on YouTube and people are winding them up to redline. If it was a commuter car or a lease it’s fine but if you plan on keeping the car I would stay away from a car they have been test driving.

You also get the dealer workers that take the cars for joyrides.

It would be a purchase, and when I test drove it I for sure red lined as the salesperson encouraged me too. (I was not informed on engine break in prior to my first test drive. I read about it online later.)

Also I have another offer on a vehicle with 23 miles, where the dealer claims they instruct the test drivers to only drive it a certain way, and they limit who can test drive. Not sure how much I trust that since he mentioned it after my concern of high RPM. He is willing to drop the price on that and I will be visiting him tomorrow. What would be a fair price drop do you think? I asked him for $2k off MSRP. (has $2k in port options, including diffuser)

The one with 23 miles does not seem bad because of the $2,000 in options. I am waiting on my M2C to come in, it shows “awaiting carrier assignment” on the status online. I got a little over $3,000 off MSRP plus I will get the $500 rebate from BMW Car Club of America after purchase.
It’s best to shop around.

95 miles is too much for me. Dealers, especially in SoCal are selling these at MSRP. If they are giving you $3k that's all you need to know about the undesirability of that car new with that many miles on it.

Also, the deposit thing they told you is complete bullshit. By law they MUST give you your deposit back on request with no conditions.

If you're keeping the car for awhile, I would steer clear of the 95 mile one. Just for a piece of mind...and I honestly doubt the dealer would give too clear of instructions on how to drive the car.

If I were you, I would just go brand spanking new. $3K is a lot of money, but if you're keeping it for the long haul, it's a non-factor for me

I don't even know who they letting drive the M2s. When I bought mine, I saw three M2s at different dealerships with cash in hand. Ready for a full purchase, but wanted to test drive one first. Yet they still wouldn't let me drive one. I ended up placing an order at yet another dealership for one and paying in full on delivery, never getting to test drive one.

FWIW I bought one with 49 miles on it. You're under factory warranty. I dont believe that those 49-100 miles are going to break the engine. Also, keep in mind that not all dealers are located on a highway where folks can go crazy during their test drives, though employees taking it for joyrides is definitely a possibility.

the miles would only matter if you plan on keeping the car past the warranty period. its not going to effect your resale value.

Agree with above. If you are keeping the car for less than 4-5 years, there is almost no chance your engine will grenade or have a problem because of this. As you have no doubt read on the board, many owners believe the break-in rules are BS and think that flogging the car from the start is the way to go.

Keeping it long term? Then $2-3K is not worth it - order your own.

I think you can get 2 or 3k off anyway if you open up your search area.
I have a hard time buying a car that has an extended test drive history.

Example:
I went to the VW dealer to try out a GTI Autobahn. The salesman guided me to an industrial part of town to "try out" the car. He showed me how to use the launch feature and said to GO FOR IT. That car had 7 miles on it and we were torturing the engine and drivetrain. The brakes were smoking from the stability control kicking in. I assume someone eventually bought that car....

You will be fine. I would take the 3k off. 100 miles is nothing.

Have the service department hookup their BMW scantool and see when and what value the max speed and rpm was logged. Get that printed out before purchasing so if something fails in the future they do not blame you for not obeying warranty.

chmura I asked my dealership to check the reserved vehicle for me because it has 58 miles and they said they would have to charge $189 or $200 to have a tech go pull that data and print that report. Is there anything that says they have to check for me without that kind of fee?

yes...just tell them you wont buy the car unless it free...lol you can ask for whatever you want before you buy the car..its called negotiation.

plus if they won't give you virtually free report to convince you to spend 60k on a car...then they'll probably screw you in some other way anyways.

BMW already said the m2c isnt production limited...they make them as long as people buy them...just wait for the right deal.

Ok. Yea this dealership so far is quite off-putting when I try to negotiate. When I mentioned cancelling, they just said we have 2 people waiting for the car so please let them know. I normally would blow them off if it weren't for my situation of living off a rental car right now. So far, all the builds available are not the right color.

I would not pay for that. Thats pretty shady for them to ask money for a tech to connect an OBD reader to the car. After all this is BMW selling a new BMW. This should be pretty easy for them to do and get these values.

Tell them to get the information and you will buy it once you see the report.

95 miles is nothing. Take the $3k and buy the M2C. You have a full four year warranty available if anything goes wrong.

My M2 had 58 miles on it when I bought it. 18 months in I have had zero problems. Noting though that I put about 40 of those miles on myself with an extended test drive.

i would try expanding your search to more dealerships. I would also try to put pressure on your sales rep to get you the report for free. this is one of the situations where you can have your sales rep work for you since he obviously want to sell you the car and you make him go through the hoops of getting the report.

If your sales rep is not working to earn the sale...i say get a different one or go to a different dealership. You can always ask for a different sales rep. Your potentially buying a 61k bmw not a 16k kia...they should put in more effort to sell you the car..lol.
