Maybe it's selfish of me, and maybe it's not responsible of me, and maybe we'd be doing harm to the future generations, but I will really miss the "regular" cars, the ones with manual transmission, cable throttle, brakes without energy recovery system, oil dipstick, a spare tire, and most of all the ability to work on cars. Maybe I'm just afraid of the changes that are coming. I don't know what to think anymore, but I'm pretty sad.

...although, on the other hand, like Jay Leno said a few years back about the Honda FCX Clarity, maybe cars like that will save our Porsches and other internal combustion toys; and of course that is assuming that car manufacturers will still be making cars like that, which is pretty unrealistic looking at the new cars and technologies that are being employed.

Oh yes because BMW will have that in a M2/3/4 that cost under 70k. I could see a i8///M for 200k with some of that 918 stuff.

If it makes the M cars more expensive that would be good. It will make it more exclusive like it used to be. I like this.

Umm... Tesla is not Gen 1. They've come a long way from the original generation of electric vehicles. Including the GM EV-1 in the 1990's.

...and while BMW is having a hard time unloading either of its i platforms, Tesla is building and selling its cars as fast as they can build them. In fact, last I checked a couple of months ago, Tesla had over 400,000 paid reservations for their Model 3 which won't even be manufactured for a year or two!

So, if BMW is going to beat Tesla at building EV's, they better get started. A good place to start is to build something that is competitive in the market and/or something that people actually want.

Don't get me wrong. I think the i8 is an interesting niche vehicle. In fact, I have a paid reservation for my dealers first allocation for the i8 Spyder. However, I wouldn't get an i8 as my daily driver though as its completely impractical. The i8 Spyder would effectively replace my M6 Convertible as my summer fun vehicle. I would continue to use my Model X as my daily driver...

the 2004 330i was invoiced at 41k
the 2004 m3 was invoiced at 45k

I don't care if the cars will be faster if they will be less fun, more numb, and HEAVIER. Shit, I have more fun in an E30 325is over a much faster sedan like the current 5er.

Cant wait to see a Hybrid M3/4 in the future. The top Hyper cars of this world are based off of hybrid technology.

M cars were more exclusive in the past based on sales volume. Higher prices in the future will make it somewhat exclusive again. That's what I meant.

However - the current i8 architecture and technology will be fairly outdated in the not-to-distant future - so with future hybrid tech - this all will fit into a sub-3500 lb family sedan priced roughly equivalent to the current M3/M4 (adjusting for inflation). Just a question of time...
That's my point. The i8 tech was outdated when it came out. I'm sure decades ago TRW (who actually patented the Prius-type of hybrid drivetrain in the early 1970's) and GM and others started out with architecture with the ICE in the front (or rear) and the electric in the rear (or front) and realized that the car would have no passenger/luggage space. BMW decided with the i8 they'd make a car that had excellent performance and the sacrifice of usability. When you look at the i8's performance, it doesn't achieve its great acceleration AND get 50 MPG. That said it does give good performance at around 35 PMG, much better performance than a 35 MPG car, but nowhere near the 55 MPG targets that are 9 years away.
Wow you 2 have no idea wtf are you talking about... The i8 technology is outdated !! holy Jesus I had to read that twice ??? So outdated that it's the only car under 150k with same technology as super cars like the 918, la Ferrari, McClaren p1 etc..

The i8 is the future of M cars, or better yet M hybrid Super cars ! Not electric tesla crap, HYBRID capable of recharging then self, capable of 500+ hp, capable of crazy Torque, capable of Great mpg, capable of AWD and very quick 0-60..

Instead of all this talk about electric crap - how about ///M goes back and engineers a new V8 for next gen M3/4 cars to match C63!

I'm sick and tired of hybrids / electrics looking to be performance cars.
The new NSX is a prime example.

So, slightly off topic, let me get this right, the manufacturing and eventual disposal of the batteries is better for the environment than the efficiencies and reduced pollution benefits they bring, correct?

And no, I'm no more an environmentalist than the next guy, sorry, person!!!
