I've just read a post that on the original M3 , they have used the M10 block and did some modifications with the M88 (minus 2 cyl) etc and created the S14 . But the first M car the M1 used engine code M88 . Do you think that BMW kinda did the same thing on the first ever M2 ? Used the N55 block but added parts from S55 ? Why did they did that on their first M2 ?

Yes, this is what they did. M2's N55 shares some internal parts of the S55.

So just like they did on the e30 m3 ?

I guess. I don't know anything about the e30 m3 other than what you said. For the record, you can look up all the part numbers on realoem.com to see what's different between the N55 and S55.

They did the same thing on the 1M. Started with N54 engine and added M3 parts.

Yes i know that , but i was suprised when i saw that the S14 motor came out of the M10 block which it was used on 2002 1998cc + M88 cylinder heads . Its kinda the same thing .

bmw was a very small company when the e30 came out...i'm sure they did what they could not to have to machine new parts. Paying for the tooling and machining of new parts on a OEM level is very expensive, especially when you dont have a large volume to amortize the costs like a ford or toyota.

The M2 N55 has S55 crank bearings, S55 pistons and an S55 oil sump.

It also has a suction pump which moves oil around the sump and the turbocharger is connected to the suction pump to achieve suitable lubrication during high G forces - e.g. hard track driving.

Thanks buddy , cause some people refer to the m2 n55 like a single turbo version of the s55 .

The M2 N55 is a bit of a hybrid really.

Compared to the previous high output N55 like in the M235I it has:

A fair amount of reworded and additional cooling, a different exhaust system, S55 pistons, S55 crank bearings, S55 sump and oil suction pump. The induction is slightly different through an additional hole in the air box from the normal N55. Different engine control software and MAPs.

The cylinder head between S55 and N55 are very similar anyway. S55 has a chargecooler and is twin turbo wheras N55 has an intercooler and uses a single twin scroll turbocharger.

The main difference is the block - S55 is closed deck, N55 is open deck and the crankshaft which is lighter on the S55.

But the main differences on the sound is maybe that the m4 is twin turbo , cause it really has almost the same tone as the 335i twin turbo ?

As well as the S50 for U.S. models. I didn't think about it at the time, but I had a Bentley repair manual (Very good manual BTW) for my E36 M3. I remember a lot of stuff being shared with the regular M50 engine.
