6MT Shift Knob & Boot separation question
Has anyone successfully separated the knob from the retainer ring without having to drill out the glue holding the two index posts? e.g. heat?
Thanks. |

There's no way around it. You need to pry the glue out to separate them.
I did it when I wanted to keep the stock shift boot with the mp shift knob |

I wrote something up on it. You need to remove the blob of glue on the 2 pins from the shift knob in order to separate it. You can always glue it back together.

I used an exacto knife to cut away the glue and it worked fine but like the others have mentioned I hot glued the post after installing the MP knob.

iND sells it pre built, no need to glue anything. You can sell the stock one on the 2 series forum and make a nice chunk of money back. That's the smartest/easiest way to go about it IMO.

Thanks to all the instructions on the forum, I actually did the knob and hand brake swap, didn't take much time at all. I used a micro flathead to chip & remove the factory glue without damaging the 2 square posts. Paid less than $300 for both parts, instead of paying $295 alone for the IND pre-fab shiter+boot alone. Added benefit is that I now know how the whole assembly fits together. The shift knob actually doesn't have to be glued to the boot for the whole assembly to stay put nicely once fitted back. The plastic ring can't slip down from the shaft due to larger diameter at the lower section, and the knob itself has spring tension detent inside to keep it snug and pressed down on the plastic ring with the plastic clip spread. I like the MP knob much better as shifting feels solid, though it took a day or 2 to get comfortable with a "smaller" knob. |
