Most of the designs before today were boring in standard form. BMW cars were never "out there." They were always conservative. The only difference is that the cars of before were more proportionate.

I agree. But then you'll have the Bangle cry babies who can't handle innovative design.

Not sure but is the x5 in the list ? If he did have a hand in that one I can't be the only person who thinks the current x5 is the best looking suv in bmw suv history and very close runner up to the Range Rover

Could this be a direct fallout from BMW losing the US and global sales crown to Mercedes? Is he the sacrificial lamb?

Those cars all do look good, most surprisingly the Gran Coupe 6 series. None of them are bad.

I would argue that while aesthetically pleasing, none of those cars do or ever will be considered classic/true/purist/whatever-you-want-to-call-it designs like the E46 M3, E30 or the 2002.

I think from a business standpoint, for the direction BMW is headed, this guy had it right. Most of the cars look similar if you put them side by side, there's a lot of continuity in the lineup which is good for a brand if you look at it in isolation - but compared to other pedestrian cars on the road today, most of the BMWs just blend in because unfortunately many design techniques are applied similarly across the industry.

From an enthusiast standpoint, I'm sorry but there's nothing in that lineup of cars other than MAYBE the M2 that jumps out and says "I'm special!". The entire non-M F-series cars just aren't anything to write home about, nor is a standard 5-series.

Even the F82/F80, while at least I will notice them on the street and be like "oh hey they bought an M, good job", still don't inspire anything in me.

And that is perhaps the biggest issue that people here are probably having - there is nothing inspired about the designs. That doesn't mean they are not aesthetically pleasing in some ways. But there is a big difference between those two concepts.

I am glad, to be honest. The latest models (like 7-series, 5-series, plus the ugly GT-series) are just too bland looking, some being outright ugly. BMW badly needs a fresh approach.

Bring back Chris Bangle !

It's still too much "same sausage, different length". Need some differentiation between models.

Not sure that's the direction bmw is going.

Bmw is increasing platform sharing internally and externally (with Toyota), increasing fwd cars in the lineup and continues to dilute the m brand. What would make you think they suddenly want ground breaking design.

For anyone who thinks there's too much family resemblance now, it can get worse for us. Look at audi. Or benz.

He may have been the "manager" but he didn't draw up the M2. it was someone much younger inside of BMW's design team competition.

When BMW puts out a coupe that looks like this, I'll think they've finally hired a designer:

Until then, their cars are very conservative and predictable.

On the other hand, the design direction that BMW has signaled is scary and awful:

I'd almost say bring back Henrik Fisker. But he's been busy for the last decade starting automobile companies that have failed. The only thing Fisker has been good at recently is selling stock and losing hundreds of millions of dollars.

Right now we've got the automobile version of Dan Guerrero at BMW hiring designers. Just awful.

Yeah and I've seen how his design language including on the E65 7 was copied by multiple other brands...his influence is noticeable

Uh, none of those cars are super cars. And that isn't where BMW is right now, which is to spend precious resources on a car with very limited production and market penetration only to viewed as what it really would be which is a "hey, look what we did!"

Looking back BMW doesn't really have a good history with those kinds of cars.
