Clearly BMW seem to think everyone lives in detached houses with driveways, not terraced streets where you end up parking a few feet outside someone elses house.

If people want a loud exhaust they can go with the MPE or other aftermarket like Akro. Leave the stock car at a level that it doesn't wake the neighbourhood up.

And how do you know this?

All this talk that it's louder, but every clip I've seen/heard sounds about the same as my M235i with MPE. Haven't seen a side by side or real life decibel measurement though.

Sure, that sound is nice, but not when it's anti-social. Anyone who isn't a car enthusiast looks at a loud car and thinks the driver is a twat. Anyone who lives on a terraced street with baby's and young children despise the owners of loud cars waking their kids up.

All BMW have to do is provide the MPE to those who wish to seek attention or really want the sound over everything else. For those buyers who value the handling, brakes, engine far more than the sound - IMO the real achievement of the M2 - then allow them to give up on that fraction of a percent of power from a more free flowing exhaust and have a quieter car.
Personally I dont care what my neighbours or others think. They cant call the police because the car is street legal.

Because I heard both of them in real life. Good enough?

Admittedly I can only judge from the videos as I've never heard one in real life. The stock M2 exhaust is an improvement but needs to be quite a lot louder in my view. Driving pleasure is really enhanced when your car is making real noise ! Sod the neighbours !

Supposedly the MotoGP M2 Safety Car gas a straight downpipe and an M Performance exhaust. MotoGP is in Jerez, Spain this weekend, Le Mans, France 8/5, Mugello, Italy 22/5 and Barcelona, Spain 5/6 if you want to hear it in person. Take earplugs if you go because MotoGP bikes are incredibly loud.

It's definitely louder than my 228 was, but I can think of plenty of cars and trucks that are much louder from the factory. That funky blip it does on startup makes me giggle every time.

How about the i3 or i8 for silent driving. But people who drive those and the M2 don't live in tiny terrace houses without driveways etc where they have to park in front of their neighbour's living rooms.

Anyway, my M2 doesn't seem ridiculously loud on start up or pulling away from my house. Just a nice rumble. It's only crazy loud when you are hammering it, and quite frankly that is one of the things I paid for.
