Hi G8rGrl, to answer your query and also the OP's, the bottom line when comparing the BMW M2's sound level to the m235i is this:

- Under heavy acceleration, the M2 is 9 db louder than the m235i, which is almost 'twice as loud' ('twice as loud' = 10 db)
- At highway speeds, the M2 is 5 db louder than the m235i, which is 'noticeably louder'.

The qualifications 'twice as loud' and 'noticeably louder' come from the world of psycho-acoustics (how the ear perceives loudness).

Here are some comparisons. All numbers from C&D's testing charts:

Comparison at highway speed (constant 70 MPH):

- BMW M2: 72 db
- BMW m235i: 67 db (difference -5 db)
- BMW 340i: 70 db (difference -2 db)
- Porsche Cayman GTS: 73 db (difference +1 db)
- Porsche Cayman GT4: 76 db (difference +4 db)
- MB E350 (2014): 68 db (difference -4 db)
- MB S500 (2015): 62 db (difference -10 db)

Comparison under heavy acceleration (wide open throttle):

- BMW M2: 89 db
- BMW m235i: 80 db (difference -9 db)
- BMW 340i: 76 db (difference -13 db)
- Porsche Cayman GTS: 87 db (difference -2 db)
- Porsche Cayman GT4: 90 db (difference +1 db)
- MB E350 (2014): 77 db (difference -12 db)
- MB S500 (2015): 67 db (difference -22 db)

For reference:
- +3 db is "barely perceptibly louder"
- +6 db is "clearly noticeably louder"
- +10 db is "twice as loud as"

Interestingly, and if we rely on C&D measurements, the m235i is actually a very quiet car, as quiet (or very very slightly quieter) than an MB E350 at highway speeds. And the MB S500 is quiet as a vault.

TLDR: G8rGrl, if you are driving your car civilly you can make your calls in the M2.

Do we know what setting the M2 was in during the testing? If it was in Sport or Sport+ how much louder do you think that will be compared to comfort?

Traction and Stability off! Would that be Sport +?

The other variable is how much noise Active Sound pumps into the cabin.

My last car was a g37s coupe. I did not find this car uncomfortably loud.
G37: Sound level
@ idle (dB) 42.6
@ Full throttle (dB) 77.6
@ 70 mph cruise (dB) 68.3

At cruise I think I can live with 4db higher. But based on psycho acoustics, at wot, it will be perceived as more than 2x louder!! Wow.
But this is perfect imo. Somewhat civil st cruise relatively speaking (I had no trouble using hands free for calls). But if I'm driving at wot, it's probably because I'm having some fun so I want it loud!

I had an 09 and loved it. Only thing that bugged me was the clutch and lack of low end torque. Both of which I'm sure will be vastly improved with the M2.

I sold mine last summer. It has been a loooooong wait (and counting) without a "fun" car in my garage.

Hi all,

I have a deposit in for an M2 and am more curious versus concerned about noise levels.

I would think that part of this elevated M2 measurement would come from both the louder exhaust volume and increased engine enhancement via the stereo when in Sport Plus.

I have a 2013 335i which measures at 64db as per Car and Driver. It is definitely a quiet car when cruising fast. My other vehicle (a Mazda CX-5) measured at 70 in C&D, and it is somewhat louder at that speed, but certainly not unbearable.

The 2016 340i - essentially the exact same platform as my 335 with the same size summer performance tires, but including engine enhancement via the stereo, and apparently more of a vocal actual exhaust note vs the 335 measured at 70db. That is a BIG difference for such similar vehicles, I would guess that either the 340i or M2 would measure somewhat lower in 'comfort' mode without the additional noise being generated due to the higher performance settings being used while tested.

So there is likely some degree of range of loudness available depending on settings...

I'm quite surprised by the negative comments in this thread. BMW went to the effort of removing as much sound deadening as possible in the M2 to make it a more raw experience and remove as much weight as possible, which I would have thought appeals to this demographic. The most interesting thing I've read is that they had to add back a mere 300g of sound deadening from the roof because it made the car too loud when it rained!

Btw, my current daily drive is a Megane Trophy-R (what sound deadening?) so the M2 is going to be my new quiet daily lol.

It seems to me that the only fair way to compare cabin noise is to make the comparison with the active sound turned off/down in comfort mode. Artificial sound should not be counted as cabin noise.

That's true. The issue is it's all subjective and some of us have cars on order.

A number of M3 owners have commented on how quieter the car is at constant speed without ASD. Though you might hear the tires a bit more since ASD has a noise-cancelling feature if I'm not mistaken.

Hmm, I've never heard that BMW has noise cancelling in their ASD. I know that some car makers have it though.

Garage List
Too loud then disconnect the asd and toss some carpet mats under your weathertechs in the car and trunk.
Too quiet then leave asd connected use weathertechs only and buy an aftermarket or bmwp exhaust.

Next.

Holy cow!! The 1M is really loud for a 70mph cruise. Odd it is quieter on hard acceleration and louder at cruising speed. 80dBA at a 70mph cruise would drive me bonkers on a long road trip.

This has been discussed in this thread, but your numbers don't match. Do you have anything to bolster your contradictory data?

Also, dB SPL typically aren't A-weighted. Do you intend these units?
