Warranty question
Morning guys!
I had a bit of a heart stopper over the weekend, with a drivetrain malfunction light. One of the charge pipes had blown. Fortunately, I'm still under warranty (just), but it runs out at the start of August, and I'm planning on keeping the car until the next M2 is released. BMW quotes me $5800 for a years additional warranty - does anyone have a company that they like, that charges sane prices? |

Why buy an extended warranty. Just self insure it. 99% chance it will be cheaper. Especially for one or two years.

Well, If you are going for new M2... It depends on your dealer.
In Europe if your vehicle had been maintained at dealership and your mileage is not like on Taxy car, you would probably get any major fault fixed by manufacturers goodwill. Generally it goes at least for 2 years after warranty period ends. |

Hey guys,
So I've heard some conflicting things regarding possible voided warranty on '18 M2's and was looking for some additional insight/info. The car I'm in the process of purchasing is at 2400 miles. The BMW dealer that performed the first service (only thing on carfax shows tires replaced at 1k miles) confirmed the 1200 mile BIS was never done. I reached out to service managers at multiple BMW dealerships regarding f87 M2's that have not gotten their 1200 mile break-in service done and was told (by some) that the warranty would be voided, but also told the contrary and I would have nothing to worry about. Anyone know what the deal is here? |

I would reach out to BMW Customer Relations via email for a definitive answer to that 1200-mile service question. For one thing, you'll get an answer in writing, from Corporate, that you can use later assuming their answer is "no your warranty isn't voided" and need to get warranty service from a reluctant dealership.

For what it's worth, when I called my local BMW assistant service manager yesterday, he said: we like to see the service done between 1000 and 1200 miles. Get that gunk (metal shavings?) out of there. If you wait until 1400 miles, you "run the risk" of losing the ability to buy an extended warranty in the future. And, the car can never receive the "Certified Pre-Owned" label should you sell/trade to a dealership, since the break-in service was not done on time.

For people who don't want to self-insure, and it's too late for OP, the solution is to get mechanical breakdown through your car insurance. Geico has it and it's extremely affordable, but you have to add it when the car is new.

BMW used to have a 1200-mile first service on ALL models, not just M's.. then when they decided to start including free maintenance, suddenly the requirement vanished for all but M cars. That's peculiar. Or not. It's all about the $$.
I doubt going to 2400 miles has caused any long-term damage of any kind.

Hopefully the M2 is much more reliable than my E90 M3, but I had fabulous success with a $5k third-party warranty from Mercury Insurance. They paid out $25k on my M3 over 6 years. (I wrote a painful account of that ordeal here.) Thanks to that experience, I'll be buying an extended warranty on all of my future European luxury cars.
Here are a few things to consider though: * Is your car going to get a lot of use/miles? If no, then maybe the warranty isn't needed. * Do you use your cars hard? Then the warranty might help again. * Are you very picky about your car? I'm the kind of guy that inspects his engine bay and suspension regularly for issues, so I had more claims than the average person. * Will you modify the car? You'll probably want to skip the warranty then. Realize that not all extended warranties are created equal. Some, like Mercury, come from insurance companies and are thus regulated by the state insurance laws. I personally trust these a bit more. Vanguard, Fidelity, and Safeguard are some other reputable warranty companies. Also, the coverage levels can vary a lot. The warranties I had success with were platinum exclusionary warranties, which covered everything unless it appeared in a list of exclusions. (Curiously, my Cadillac CPO warranty had more exclusions than my Mercury warranty.) Finally, all of the extended warranty contracts that I've read have exclusions for cars that are used on the track. However, I don't think this tends to be a problem for cars that are kept stock, because your mechanic and the warranty adjuster aren't likely to be thinking about track use.
