Should I buy this daily?

I’m giving my X2 to my daughter next month and need a new daily. I still drive the CS at least 1-2 times per week.

I just looked at the 2024 VW Jetta GLI 40th Anniversary 6MT. It’s nothing super special, but it has decent torque, can sit 2 large adults and 2 medium adults in the back and drive pretty well. 18” black wheels, Apple CarPlay, etc.

Apparently they are only making 1984 of them in 3 colors but I have no delusions that it will be a collector.

Roughly $32K out the door, $12K cheaper than the GTI Autobahn they had in the showroom.

Its not my dream car, but it’s a German 6 spd 4 door. Brand new with full warranty and will get me to the office just fine.

I was leaning towards the GTI, but they are a little pricier and my 13 year old son doesn’t like hatches. He will probably get this when he turns 16.

Mainly just looking to see if people would say to avoid this. I had an 06 GTI and really liked it. I know the Jetta used to be essentially the same platform, and I think still is very similar in sedan form.

It's affordable, but for the money, I'd probably choose a Civic Si if you're trying to also stick with the 6spd. Not sure what the dimensions are between the GLI and a Civic, but reliability and fun would probably sway me over to the JDM...

My wife has a ‘22 GLI 6MT. Cost-cutting is evident everywhere, but it’s still a ton of car for the $$ and she loves it. Gets amazing gas mileage on regular fuel. Lots of room everywhere.

I’d probably prefer it with DSG though because there’s a lot of rev hang.

I went ahead and bought it. It’s actually a pretty nice car to sit in. I went with the 6spd because I prefer a manual, and now I have one that I won’t mind teaching my kids to drive it. My daughter likes it better than the X2 since it’s new and has better tech, so I may even give it to her and take the X2 back after a year for her to get out all of the stupid mistakes on a 5 year old car.

I considered the Civic as well, but I’m just partial to German and I feel like you don’t see as many GLIs are Civic Sis.

I’ll probably get bored with it eventually, but worst case it’s a fun little commuter that gets great gas mileage and I won’t get hurt too bad if I need to sell it at some point.

Update: I really enjoy the GLI. It’s a great daily driver that I prefer over the M2 if there’s any traffic or if I know I may need to park somewhere congested. Of course a Sunday spirited drive in the M2 is more rewarding experience, and sitting in the M2 is a nicer place to be.

Pros: Great gas mileage. Takes 87 octane. 4 doors. Really easy clutch and shifter. All the tech I need. Looks sporty but not boy racer (the red accents in the front are a bit much). Feels lighter than the M2 and is plenty fast when I need it to be.

Cons: It feels a little floaty at highway speeds (75mph+). Plastic interior rattles at various RPM frequencies. Pretty large wheel gap. Certainly not the same level of quality as the CS, nor should it be for about 1/3 the price.

Coilovers would probably fix 2 of the 4 cons, but I also don’t want to sacrifice daily comfort just yet.

Bonus: I got this customized glass plaque unexpectedly in the mail from VW since the GLI 40 is limited to 1984 units. BMW should take a note from VW on this.

I say, if you're gonna get a daily, get the most capable daily possible.

The sweet spot in the lineup is this Jetta trim level and the GTI S. I've purchased them for my kids and they are great cars. At 32k they represent a vast savings over the fully spec'd out autobahn trimmed GTI.

The autobahn gets too close to the R in price, which is a different car entirely.

In fact I picked up manual Golf R recently to use as a winter commuter, it's been great so far if you can overlook the bad electronics and serious downgrade in material quality from the previous generation.
