Seems like a pretty good rule. I do something similar, which is to buy like-new parts instead of new, then keep all my OEM parts to swap back upon sale, or sell them to the new owner at a discount (the same price I bought them for originally), so all I'm losing is labor.

And that's easily twice what I have in my M2
Porsche has nothing I'm interested in for $80K. In fact, for me, it's 911 or bust, and I'm not that enamored with the 911 (oh to have a 993).

I looked at the M3 hard before I got my M2, but the increased luxury didn't appeal to me so much, and it wasn't as fun to drive. Dollar for dollar I'd still have an M2, but I may not be the norm. I prefer smaller cars in general as well.

Thanks for your thoughts guys!
I went back to the 997 and found a whole lot of car in 2016! I agree though boxster/cayman aren't as compelling even as 718's.

I just pick up my 2017 and mods done by prior owner got them about exactly $0.00 in added value. I picked up a car that would have probably taken me a year to piecemeal together. Best mod is the Remus exhaust.

Rich guys do that. They have better things to do than keep stock parts, swap them back on, and sell each separately. I'm a hustler, so you can bet when I sell my car it'll be returned to stock, I'll get great money for it, and make more on all my mods than I paid for them.

Congrats on your deal though!

Great thread! I have modified just about every performance car I've owned. I really came down to the fact that most were the best car I could buy at the given time in my life (financially speaking).

The most money I spent on a particular build was my 6th gen Camaro. I spent just under $20k in mods over 6 years. In the end it was just a Camaro and the resale value reflected it. I still loved the car and had lot of fun with it.

Fast forward to my 2010 ESS 625 M3 that I stumbled upon on Bring a Trailer. The car had every mod I wanted done already (over $25K invested), I got it for $40k. Perhaps the mod gods smiled down on me after all the money I have spent on previous cars over the years?

Since I'm a stupid car guy, blindly guided by impulse, I over paid for my current "factory" modded car...
