Food for thought regarding Mobile One 0-40

I have been running their 0-40 synthetic euro blend on my own out of cycle home oil changes because, well, BMW uses it when they do the free ones.

I am rethinking that and moving over to Liquid Moly going forward.

This jives with my Blackstone Oil analysis, the last one was < 1500 miles on the oil but two track days which is my limit.

SUS Viscosity @ 210°F 54.4 -- SHOULD BE 55-56
cSt Viscosity @ 100°C 8.59 -- SHOULD BE 8.8 to 12.2

From the report.

odometer. The viscosity is a little low for 0W/30 oil, and that's okay. It wasn't thinned by fuel and it didn't
bother internal parts based on wear levels.

Discuss away. I am an engineer, but not a chem engineer, those guys are the real nerds of our world and I tend to put a lot of faith in their work and findings.

BMW doesn't use Mobil products, their "Twin Power Turbo" BMW-branded oil is made by Castrol.

Mobil 1 0W-40 hasn't carried the BMW LL-01 approval for the past few years, unless that has changed again.

You are right. They used Shell LL-01 before Castrol. I don’t ever remembering BMW using Mobile one. Before Shell it was Castrol also.

Mobile one is not LL-01 approved.

The reformulated M1 0-40 has LL01 approval again as of early this year. https://www.mobil.com/en/lubricants/...bil-1-fs-0w-40

M1 0W-40 is now API SP licensed and has a very similar additive package to the other SP oils like PP Euro with a split between calcium and magnesium. It's important to note that Lake is a smart guy but I don't think he was correct in his initial assessment if you are talking European 6 and 8 cylinder cars. LSPI is pretty much unheard of on stock N55, S55, Porsche 9A1, etc. I do think the new detergent package is a good idea to just eliminate that risk completely in case you have a sketchy tune or bad gas etc.

I am using this oil now in my S55, seems fine. I like it because it's available and comes in 5 Qt jugs. PP Euro is good too but in stock less often at my local Walmart.

BTW - if you find a bottle of M1 0W-40 and it has 6748 stamped on the back label it's the new formulation even if the bottle says SN not SP.

Food for thought regarding LSPI (which seems to be the majority of what this video is calling out):

Quote:
I wouldn't say LSPI is any more worrisome in the S55 than it is on any other DI engine. All things being kosher (such as proper Air/Fuel Ratio and octane, proper gapped and un-worn spark plugs, no casting burrs present in combustion chamber, no excessive carbon deposits present in the combustion chamber, proper ignition timing, little to no oil present in combustion chamber......etc....etc.....etc) LSPI is a pretty rare event and even more rare would be damage caused by an LSPI event. Speaking in the terms of the S55 itself, the DME is actually very good at dealing with knock (pre-ignition and detonation). If it hears a knock event, it will pull timing until the knock stops. If it cannot contain the knock it will just shut off fuel to that cylinder all together, effectively shutting down the cylinder and stopping the knock event all together and trigger limp mode. The S55 DME is very advanced and very fast.*

TL;DR: Mobil 1 0W-40's current "recipe" contains a higher calcium level than newer formulas, which is not recommend for Direct Injection (DI) engines due to the potential causal factor of Low Speed Pre-Ignition**

**(according to the video) "significant testing"

Just had my last free service by BMW today but I plan on switching to PP Euro 5w40 on my next oil change. Though Walmart's $28 for a 5-quart jug of Mobil 1 0w40 is pretty tempting- for some reason I thought I remember seeing edycol preferring Pennzoil/Castrol/Motul to Mobil 1, though I would imagine they all work pretty well.

This is very old info. You can't even buy the SN formula of M1 0W-40. It is all SP on the shelves for almost 12 months in the US. It is an SP mix of lower calcium and magnesium now. You can just read a few posts up where I explained it.

In that thread you linked, you can safely ignore CaryTheLabelGuy's post. He doesn't know what he's talking about in this case. LSPI is a very real phenomenon replicated by every major automaker and oil additive formulator. It's not the same as normal knock or pre-ignition, it's usually much worse when it does occur. However, it just doesn't seem to happen with N55/S55.

You very likely did not. Every SN bottle I've seen in the past year has the code 6748 stamped on it. That means it's the new formula in old bottles.
