M2 Loose Rear End?
I'm thinking about the m2 for my next daily and have some questions as I haven't driven it, but I have driven the M4.
With all of the nannies on which is how I would drive it, do you constantly have to fight with the rear end? This was the case with the M4 and I hated that about the car as you couldn't put the power down efficiently. I also find the B58 as the better overall motor than the S55 due to superior sound and fuel economy, it seems like the M cars are mostly over powered now and lack the precision of previous generation M cars. The question here is does the M2 really strike a perfect balance of power and precision or is it like a little muscle car like the M4? |

If you have all the nannies on it's like your regular grocery getter. In sport+ mode and mdm it likes to play. With all the nannies off is when you awaken the beast. It's rear and the whole car is tight when you have tc full on

the early m4s had too much tq in the early rpms and would cause snap oversteer in corners. The later models BMW tuned the tq to come in later in a more progressive manner.
The n55 m2 will seem more balanced compared to the m2 competition in my opinion. i would test drive both if your interested in the m2. The m2 has a shorter wheel base compared to the m4 so the m2 competition will feel more looser rear end compared to the m4. |

Maybe Look at Supra unless you're hard up for 6MT? Don't buy something you find inferior |

The original M2 hit the sweet spot. Linear power and just enough tire (265) to make it easy to control. No traction issues.
From 2019 it was replaced with the Competition model and got a detuned S55 from the M4 while keeping the same tire. I don't have experience with the M2C but it looks like the detuning affected the low end and the power is nice and linear as well. |

OG M2 all the way. I traded my M4 and absolutely love the car. A bit more knife (M2) than hammer (M3/4).
Plus the S55 has an exhaust that sounds like a tractor and the N55 has a great exhaust note for a turbocharged car. |

I daily mine as well and I don't have to fight the car for traction. With Sport + the rear end will move around under throttle, but its still pretty tame. Cant comment on full TC off as I've only done this a handful of times. I have a LCI(2018) and am not sure if that is different from the 2016-17 model years software.

I have an m2c and it seems pretty tame with the stability control all the way on. Mdm mode will definitely let you get very sideways but if you leave everything on the car really doesn’t move around much. It’s got a short wheelbase so it does change directions quickly, but the rear end isn’t all over the place by any means. I suspect you’ll be fine especially with a non comp car.
Heh, s55 does sound like ass too. I just like that extra power. |

The car is excellent and very confidence inspiring. I have 40,0000 miles and 24 track days on mine so I speak from some experience. I can say anyone can turn off the DSC/TC and turn a good day into a bad day. Most complaints here come from driver issues not the car.

My 17' M2 is excellent and very confidence inspiring. I have 40,500 miles and 30 track days on mine so I speak from some experience. I can say anyone can turn off the DSC/TC and turn a good day into a bad day. Most complaints here come from driver issues not the car.

As a pile-on, the OG M2 is such a well-balanced car - and with some additional camber (grip) up from and Ohlins R&T, it moves around very smoothly when DSC is off. I think of it as my little drift car 👍

My first ever rear wheel drive was the ATS-V which I hated because even with traction on, tail can go crazy even in a strait line.
The M2 is much more balanced as been said. Saw some videos of the M2C which claims that the extra power and extra torque, makes this car more wild as to rear end movement. |

My M2 was made in March 2017 and the Sport+ would allow a tiny bit of wheelspin but almost no slip angle. After a software update from version 505 to 529 (or 530, don't remember) the car changed drastically. It now allows way more wheelspin and around 25 degrees slip angle. |

Hmmm mine is a 2017 pre LCI/update.
I am able to see the version of some of the car's software through the iDrive settings menu. I am assuming this is different from the software you refer to. How do you check the version of the software you're talking about? All my searching just shows the iDrive software updates. Last edited by GiacomoH; 01-11-2020 at 12:44 PM.. |

Does the updated MDM in the newer software differ from the Euro MDM setting? My searching is revealing the Euro MDM setting to be a popular mod. It sounds like that could be what I want.

I don't know if they are the same. I've just heard complaints from OGM2 owners that their MDM mode is intrusive. The MDM mode in my M2C is really loose. It slides around corners and will even spin a bit in 3rd gear on the freeway if nailed. I don't feel it kicking in, it is a very natural feeling. My M235i was terrible. It jurked and cut the throttle, it drove me crazy.
