Within a year, most dealers are willing to play.
Unless something has changed in the past year, only extremely low production cars or M cars require a dealer to use an allocation for an ED purchase - regular series production cars don't use up one of a dealer's allocations for that model. In those cases it's an "extra" sale, but of course we're on an M2 forum, which DOES require an allocation for ED - a fact I did not know until I first inquired about ED for my M2 way back in January of last year.

If you get ED do you have to figure out shipping back to North America by yourself?

Just be aware that it takes 8-12 weeks to get you car back to you.

Wow, my car took less than 4 weeks and it was delivered to the west coast having gone through the Panama Canal. I know this since I tracked its progress through shipping websites and Panama Canal web cams :-)

I'm learning more and more everyday here.

Does the European Delivery always come with a 5 - 7.5% discount?

It could always take less, but I think right now they are telling people expect 8-12 weeks (probably overstating the actual delay, hoping you will be happy if it takes less time).

My Euro’s have always taken 9-12 weeks. Part of that is not dropping back in Munich. (West Coast)

I will have to admit that I dropped my car off at the port in Bremerhaven. I didn't want people racing my car on the autobahn. The car only sat for 2 days before it was loaded on the ship. If you drop off at a remote location, there likely could be a delay on that leg of the journey to the port. However the boat ride is between 3 and 4 weeks to the west coast.

If you order an M car to be delivered at the dealer doesn't it also require an allocation?

Well that's not right. I believe the discount is part of the package. Pretty sure you can't get ED without ED price. My advise, find a better dealership!

Im in no hurry either.
I'm second in line at my dealer, but I'm gonna let a bunch of folks ahead of me since I'm already planning a trip to Germany NEXT fall. My hope is that by then they will offer MGM again for the 2020 MY.

Yes, any bimmer does if it's not ED, plus M cars also need one for ED.

You definitely can get ED w/o ED price - some ppl on here paid that (non-ED sticker price for ED car). It's up to the dealer to set the price, but it's basically a markup if you pay non-ED sticker for an ED car.

ok time for some stupid ED related questions

1. Do you have to keep the car for a certain period of time / mileage? can you simply take the discount and drop the car off for shipment to the US? i'd hate to drive the car there since I plan to wrap (clear bra) the car. Not sure yet but i am leaning towards it.
2. what about the front tags / license plate? i live in NC and luckily we just need one license plate and if the ED delivery requires the front ones too it'll expose the drilled holes on the front

Yes, you can take delivery and not drive it. Tell them to send it to the ship but you really should enjoy it there!
Front plate is normally taped to the front bumper with double sided tape.
Where in NC? What dealership?

1. I think you're required to drive it to the drop off location so minimum of that distance. However, you'll be missing out on the key aspects of ED -> exploration of europe and it's beauty in your own car.

A much safer bet would be to wrap the front/sides with the track tape while in Europe.

2. ED doesn't drill the plates. They use sticky tape and you can take them with you after dropping your car off as souvenirs.

Not true. You don't have to drive it to the dropoff (MUC airport for most of us) or anywhere else. You just have to show up in person at the Welt and sign the paperwork. That's it. Note: they do charge extra for the 'privilege' of NOT driving it to dropoff ( €75 fee, I think).

With that said, unless you're doing ED purely for a discount, why would anyone NOT want to drive the car? You're in the land of the autobahn with a high-performance automobile. For crying out loud, drive the damned thing. Not driving it there is kind of like going to a high-end steak restaurant and skipping the beef in favor of a salad. Yeah, you can do it, and some people undoubtedly do do it, but they're kind of missing the point. Plus, you've got to eventually get yourself back to MUC (or at least some airport) anyway, right? You might as well drive and save the cab/Uber/bus fare.

I'm glad I did ED when I did (the 1st half of 2015). Not only was the discount better, it seems like buyers were getting less resistance from their dealers about booking it. Many of the mom-and-pop BMW dealerships have been sold to the big chains that don't care about ED.

i hear you.. the thing is i have been to a few places in europe and even lived there for a few months.. also have been to welt before and have rented an M4 and driven on autobahn for a few hours... max i could muster myself to go was 150 mph... thats why if i do the ED it'd be purely for the discount..
