BMW M5 E39 - Creation of Legend Video
Featured on BIMMERPOST.com BMW M5 E39 - Creation of Legend: Charlie Chaplin style until around minute 18, ie, almost total silence. Then some loaded engine testing with sound. Later some chassis testing and drive on the Nordschleife. Somewhat painful to see how these cars were setup to understeer from the factory, although safer for most drivers. Interesting to see how BMW tested everything back then and how they did it to uncover potential problems... Since nowadays technology allows more intense data logging, I guess/hope they do more intense testing today. |

The e39 m5 is one of my favorite BMWs ever made. Wonderful video!

Fantastic video - and I thought I had seen them all (well, truth be told this was posted on M5Board last week, so I think I have!).
As I said on M5Board, the footage of the white car being tested by the machines could be in many modern art museums - the patrons can surely reflect on the nature of man and machine, or machine and machine... I'm biased having driven E39s since 1999, but I do consider them to be a highpoint in BMW automotive history. BMW got almost everything right with them.

I owned a e39 when I was younger. Had many problems with it. I hear it's not such an uncommon thing with that generation. Is that true?

In my experience no. I drove a 1999 528i for three years, a 2002 530i for three years, and have been daily driving my 2002 M5 for almost eleven years. They are the most reliable cars I have owned. The inline-6 E39s are bullet-proof. My buddy still has his after 10 years with 300K miles. The M5 is reliable, but only if you are fastidious with maintenance.

Last of the special M5
My e34 was hand built, 4 place, super car, with the real m1 six for power. My greatest memory was giving some senior officers of the state patrol a ride and shifting out of fourth at 145, when they screamed no more!

What kind of legend we are talking about? This is the first m5 build in the same line by the same hands and tools as an ordinary 5er. Its engine is just a version of the m6x. It is basically a 540 with some tweaks.
e39 m5 is actualy where the line between m5 and everything else was erased. Its a great car but not a legend. This is not e34 m5.

An Imola Red E39 M5 has always been a car that I've wanted to own.

Pretty damn reliable. You just to watch the for the timing chain issue and keep on top of the cooling system as with all BMW's that era. Definitely wouldn't mind a 540i Touring myself

My 2002 model was very reliable. I got it used and sold it when it was 11 years old. Maintenance on the car was easy for DIY. The build quality was definitely superior compared to my F30, not even in the same category.

Post LCI models are very reliable. Not only 540, but all models with the inline 6 engines, including diesels.
