I heard it was an issue on those as well. These seemed to have have affected 2016 and early 2017 M2s the most.

Mine sounded like I was dragging a thin piece of sheet metal backing down my driveway the other day, then kind of shrieked/squealed going forward. Definitely a pebble. I pushed on the brake shield on all four corners, drove a bit and it finally grabbed hard enough to break into small enough pieces to fall out.

This has happened to me 3 or 4 times in the last couple days! Can anyone confirm if the puma number listed in the first post is accurate, and if their dealership agreed to repair? I'm concerned I'll be given a hard time since it's tough to duplicate.

It was officially added to the same tsb as m3/m4 last August. Dealers should be doing now at request without issue. Not sure if it applies to 2018 models or not though (supposedly comes with the fix).

I will say since i had it done last year on my 2017 I have not heard it.

I have 8,200 miles on my MT 2018 and today I heard the "soda can crunch noise" (and it was not the same as the pebble in the brake shield which I have had before). It was a pretty scary noise - almost pulled over to look under the car! I was going about 10-20 mph. Later that same trip (out to eat and back) it never did it again. Has anyone else had this issue on a 2018?

Ticking noise when turning

I have 2018 with 6000km. I just noticed when I was in an underground parking lot I heard a faint tick noise when turning. Anyone else experience this? Going to take it into the dealer to see if they find anything

have you taken the wheels off your car recently?

a common issue causing this are the wheel bolts not torqued properly at 140NM. Many reported cases on the forum

Good to know. Hearing this on mine as well. Interestingly, had the same issue with my M240 so wondering if this is a 2 series issue or possibly caused by potholes?

I know EXACTLY what this is. Pebbles in your rotor shields. Take it in and get them emptied out. There's a TSB for it as well, I think with a new shield.

I had it in for exactly that and first they blamed my aftermarket wheel centers. But the problem persisted after they removed them. Took them a while but they figured it out. They're back but still pretty quiet, and one day when I'm not so lazy I'll dig up the TSB and have them run it.

If you pay attention, you can probably hear it when you're close to a J-wall or something else that bounces the sound back at you.

Yup, It happened in my friends 2018 the other day. He's got a DCT with ~4000 miles. Just driving along with the windows down while i'm in the passenger seat and it just happened out of nowhere. I thought we ran some road debris over, it was pretty scary and unexpected to hear out of the blue. I thought this issue was addressed long ago but apparently not

I hear the same thing when turning in my parking garage. It sounds exactly like the sound steel brake discs make when they start clicking when parked after a drive.

It is so similar in fact that I always thought it was due to the brakes being designed as “floating calipers” and being free to expand and contract but never checked in to it any further since I thought it was normal. There is an M4 in my garage with the same brakes and wheels and it also makes an identical sound.

Also, the LCI models already come from the factory with the updated brake shield so not sure if that would be the same fix as in Pre-LCI with the original shield design.

The only difference from the brake clicking noise from previous cars is that on the M2 it happens when turning and is a lot more repetitive in frequency. It seems directly proportional to the load going through the wheel and tire.

That is what lead me think of the brakes being the culprit but the wheels being loose theory would create a similar scenario. I will have to check my lugs to see if they are loose and see if that makes the sound go away.

Charge YOU a diag fee for troubleshooting something? If they can reproduce the sound, you should change THEM a fee if they can't find any issues

Just curious, how did this turn out? based on the post 2 up, it seems to have been a different solution (and cause) that what I was told by my dealer. I'll try to find the invoice and post it here for future searches. But am very curious how yours turned out.

I think this thread has died out, but thought I'd add my invoice and the "fix" my dealer applied for what seems to be the same symptoms as OP.

It was an easy fix, but they didn't know that when we scheduled it. So they gave me a loaner 230i, which I thought was fun until I wanted to go somewhere. Anyway, I got hit while I was driving their car, bummer for them but I'm glad I was in a loaner!

Can someone tell me what is actually clicking? I notice this during track days when turning - and it's so consistent and regular that it's not junk hitting the shield. How does the "drive flange" contact the rotor and what is the "drive flange?"

It's small pieces of road debris or rocks stuck in the brake shield. You can fix it by removing the wheels and pressing back the brake shields slightly.

However the noise will always return. It's a flawed design, and I had this same exact noise on my 135i, m235i, and F80 M3

Not according to what I hear and what the dealer's information above states...

Do not assume the clicking noise is minor. Took my M2 in for the same issue and it was a busted strut that needed to be replaced. I was afraid it might be as I hit a really bad pothole a couple of weeks earlier and the steering was feeling a tad loose though it was hard to tell. The invoice is in my glove box, but will update later with the actual diagnosis. I do remember the price though $1321 parts and labor. Ouch!
