It is a wickedly fast car in all respects, handles like it's on rails, costs as much as a house and if it didn't I might be interested.....and it still sounds terrible. Having said that, EV's have no soul.....car guys that push back against EV's likely fall into the camp that like mechanical watches.....theres a soul. Tech is great, my iPhone keeps better time than my Rolex or Omega, but I love my mechanical watches and my ICE cars with their soul and the noise they make because of those moving parts.

For sound, I always thought the sound of pac man would be a good one. Well funny anyway?!

Would not it great if you could download your desired sound file to the car

I'd want my EV to sound like the Jetson's car.

Contrary too what people think, if you really like to drive fast (and I do have over 500 drag strip runs myself), it's best to have a quiet car that doesnt attract the cops. Secondly, there is nothing more strategic, and entertaining than hearing every little throttle input of the guy next to you. Sometimes it's almost comical listening to all their exhaust sounds and crackles while you pull away. You seriously almost feel embarrassed for some of these guys in their loud cars you run against.

Disney/BMW: opportunity for more $$$
As a sound designer / composer myself, I'm just glad that BMW are taking the challenge seriously & considering the urban environment.

Ben Burtt (sound designer of Star Wars) faced the same challenge Renzo Vitale has here, except that all he had to begin with was a artist's sketch of a tie fighter to work with & his imagination. The Tie Fighter sound is a car driving on wet pavement blended with the call of an elephant + doppler effects to create a sense of movement. Burtt created all the sounds of the Star Wars universe, including the languages for R2D2 and Chewbacca. He is a genius!

Hopefully Vitale comes up with something equally iconic. If not, screw Disney, just hire Burt to come up with something new.

If you want to look at companies not taking the sound of their products seriously, check out videos of Google and Amazon's delivery drones. From the videos you'd think they're silent as they remove the sound from the drone footage. The drones themselves are actually louder than leaf blowers.

Now imagine flocks of 100s or 1000s of leaf blowers flying around your city in residential areas... They should be banned by the EPA until the sound issue can be resolved.
I already hear that with all the new bmws lmao

I don't get the electric car movement. Anyone up for hydrogen combustion engines. Maybe with a Remus exhaust. No fake sound needed.

Hydrogen may eventually win out.

The electric car revolution still isn't inevitable, especially with the Japanese & South Koreans working pretty hard on Hydrogen tech.

Chris Harris' comment on the VW electric race car was funny as shit and right on point. He said it sounded like a cross between a Dyson and a dentist drill. It was kind of an interesting noise the thing made. But the noise wasn't artificial, it was the actual sound the thing makes.

I think it would be fun to download whatever sound you want. One day you have a standard electric motor sound. the next I decide I would like to hear this to cheer myself up.

If you want hydrogen to win out, vote with your wallet and buy one.

... I don't think anyone who's experienced EV life is going to want to go back to routinely filling up at public filling stations, so IMO hydrogen needs to win out before a significant portion of the people go EV. Once you've gotten used to charging at home, going to a gas (or hydrogen) station feels like a huge waste of time.

The hydrogen tech you refer to is very much part of that “electric car revolution”. A hydrogen fuel cell is, in effect, a battery that you refill like a gas tank.

BEV = battery electric vehicle
FCEV = fuel cell electric vehicle

He said “hydrogen combustion”. You can’t buy such a vehicle - there are none on the market (and probably never will be).

The exact opposite could easily be true too, though.

An electric car with both a fuel cell and a battery would actually be very practical. Something like this:

Ah. I assumed he meant something more like this:

Yes, that’s why I wanted to clear up the misunderstanding. There’s no combustion in an FCEV, and no exhaust note (which the person you replied to also mentioned). A fuel cell is a refillable battery. It is for use in an electric vehicle, not an internal combustion vehicle.
