Scraped rear bumper
No good excuse for this with backup cameras and all yet .. this happened to me during a road trip this week. I made it all the way down to SF and then this happened while parking in the overnight lot . And the poor car is only a few months old. I feel so stupid.
Anyways, this is the first time anything like this has happened to me so I'm not sure what my options are or what the price range will be. Is this something that requires replacing the entire bumper? Do I need to take it to a body shop or can a regular service shop help with something like this? (planning on taking it in to a shop in the next 2 weeks for an oil change) |

Unless technology has changes they cannot (or don't?) repair plastic, except for filling license plate screw holes. If it's gouged and not just scraped paint, you will need a new bumper. Get it done right. BTW, I never trust back up cameras or my eyes. Back in the day, I was backing into a spot and thought I was free and clear. Turns out I had forgotten about my antenna being up (yeah, this was a while back) and the metal box attached to the pole cleared the trunk as expected but snapped the antenna. |

Thanks. Thankfully it wasn't a hard impact. I'm looking at it more closely now and I think it might just be scraped paint. I don't notice any dents or holes if that's what you meant by gouged.
At any rate I'll go look up a good body shop in my area (Seattle) and get an estimate like you suggested. I agree I want to get this done right! |

Maybe Seattle prices are higher than Boston, but a new genuine bumper cover is around $750 (list price) and paint and install could be between $500 and ~$1000, depending on shop.
I had a dime size hole in my last BMW rear bumper, $600 for genuine BMW OE bumper cover and I got quotes ranging from $1100 to $1500 to replace/paint new bumper cover. One trusted shop said he could fix/paint it for $500 and since my car was 10 years old with 70K miles (but mint paint), I chose to fix it (and it was *perfect*, could not tell it was not a new cover). I would definitely replace the bumper cover on a new M2C and not repair. |

I just had something similar to this done. I had a small scrape on my bumper in the exact same spot. Although mine was 1/10 of what you have. I got a few quotes to respray the entire bumper ( mine did not have to be replaced ), and the lowest quote of $800 actually came from a BMW dealer.
Did flawless work, looks perfect now. |

You got lucky. This is limited to the bumper cover itself and can be easily swapped out for a painted new part for about $1,500 out the door. If the scrape had tagged the metal fender and required actual bodywork, you'd be way more bummed out.
Pretty elegant and easy fix since it's limited to the plastic bit. |

OP, sorry to see. From the looks of it you are only looking at a bumper repaint.
GL!

Bummer! If you are still looking for a shop, I would call your dealership or salesperson and ask where they send their cars for body work. This is how I found the body shop that installed my carbon bits. I am happy to give you the name if you would like, but they are in Tacoma. I would also ask in the NW section.
We road tripped to SF when we first got the car as well. The drive to the top of Mt Diablo was glorious! |

from the photo it looks like the bumper will need to be repainted. A good shop will advise you to also paint/blend into the quarter panel. I had a similar repair done about 2 years ago. Estimates ranged from $1000-$1600. If its determined you ned a new bumper those are around $590.
