Old man driving a M2

There I said it. I am old, probably the oldest person on this M2 forum. The last sports car that I had was a Pontiac Trans-AM back in the 80s, so you can pretty much guess how old I am. With family and kids I have been driving a station wagon.... Until NOW - The M2 !!!

Driving this M2 makes me feel young again. It has been over 30 years since I drove a manual transmission and I missed it, so I bought the M2 with 6MT. It is a blast to drive but with consequences....

I haven't received a speeding ticket in 20 years but got 1 on the first day with the M2. It is extremely challenging to stay under the speed limit. Most of the speed limits around Chicago Suburbs are between 25mph to 45mph. So by the time I was in the 3rd gear I had already reached the speeding limit.

I don't want to bore you with this post so I will stop here. But if you see an old man driving a blue M2, please move out of his way. He drives like a 25 years young man.

Welcome! You're never truly "old" if you can still drive and appreciate a car like the M2.

My last speeding ticket was in the early 90s and I find myself going far too fast in this car. I'm bound to get caught at some point. Just the price of having a little juvenile fun behind the wheel I guess.

Old? Hardly. I was driving a 55 Tbird in the sixties and I am certain there are people senior to me driving the M2.

while I am on this forum I do have a few questions about the M2 manual transmission. Mine feels a bit sticky, rubbery sticky. Is this normal on the M2? Or is it because the car is still new? And when shifting from 2nd to 3rd gear, sometimes it ended up in the 5th gear. So it is quite easy to miss the 3rd gear. But if I paused at neutral then push straight up, then I will surely get to the 3rd gear 100% of the time. Did you experience the same on yours?

Funny, one of my friends up in NJ saw his first M2 the other day and snapped a pic. He said he loved the car and found it funny an old lady was driving it. I thought that was great.

Enjoy the car OP. Although it sounds like you already are.

Yeah...I wouldn't bet the farm on you being the oldest one driving an M2. I'm 50 next year.

This is great...I am still a few ticks under 50 and I thought I might be too old for this car...it would seem that I am not, lol. Congrats OP!

FWIW, I just picked up my F87 less than a week ago and I too find the 6MT a bit "notchy"...but I have an F30 with same-ish engine (N55) and what i assume is the same 6MT with about 55,000KM on it and the F30 transmission is much less notchy, so I assume it smooths a bit over time....or you just get used to it.

I'm 56 and bought my first "M" car last year. Have owned a '76 2002 and 90 E30 convertible for a long time. Always wanted an M3 - the M2 is the "new" M3 in my book.

Yes the M2's stick is a little notchy & rubbery. Also I do have to purposely adjust my arm angle differently between gears 2-3 and 4-5 for quick (no pause), smooth, mistake free shifts. However, you get used to it and it becomes second nature. Congrats on the M2 and enjoy!

By the way, older fellas are always welcome here

Sounds just like my old man! His last sportscar was a Porsche 944 back in the 80s, he just picked up a m4 because he had to have a "better" car than his son!

He swapped his porsche for a Volvo 740 when they had me, since then its been a bunch of Volvo stationwagons, but now he's back on track(literally).

Any chance you were on 355 driving North last week? Say Wednesday or maybe Thursday?

Saw my first "unplanned" M2 sighting then.... could not catch up because the douche in the Mustang decided to block the left lane and I could not catch up.

Car was black.

I didn't expect senior citizens would be so welcomed here. I was worried I might get booed off of this young age group forum. I should visit this forum more often then.

Traffic should be cleared now. It is time to take the M2 for a spin again. I want to reach the 1200 miles break-in period ASAP.

Life is short. Enjoy while you are still able to.

Ever car I've owned since 1981 has been a manual.
This includes 2000/2006/2012 3 series (1st year in each series).
When an 'affordable' M car came out, I jumped at it rather than waiting for the 2018 3 series which having been getting too big/softer.
I have no issues with the manual and find it better than the 2012 328i which I still have.
My few tickets have been low speed ones (35-45 mph) in 25 mph areas which are probably revenue makers for the local police.
I've set my speed warning setting to 74 mph to warn and hopefully avoid tickets on expressways.
NOTE: BMW speedometers are typically higher than actual, check out http://f87.bimmerpost.com/forums/sho....php?t=1448247.

Having fun in cars keeps you young I say. Welcome and keep it up.
FIA rated race suits have a 10 year compliance from date of manufacture which is sewn onto the suit. Mine has just expired (for national level motorsport) and so I have just invested in a new one. super light weight breathable fabric used in top level motorsport. My thinking is this will be the last race suit I buy so may as well push the boat out and go for a good but expensive one. When I give up the more serious stuff I will still do some club and fun track days.....c'mon the old guys!

Congrats! The M2 manual transmission is definitely one of the car's weaknesses, very rubbery and vague. The car's excellence in its other areas and overall driving experience helps mask the very shitty transmission. Enjoy it!

Old people need to hve fun too!!! Welcome

On serious note I’ve owned Porsches’ s2000 Supra and Vw’s as well as bmw’s. Stick feels fine, i rather enjoy it. Clutch travel is similar is not significantly different.

Like all new cArs just takes time to get use to.
