luggage on planes

If you lose your luggage while travelling internationally, do they replace it for you? In other words, let's say you lose something valuable in your check-in luggage and it gets lost, do they find replace the luggage with monetary value?

There is a liability limit for each airline of something like $1,000 per bag.

I recall someone mentioning something like that. I'm not sure if it varies per airline though.

It's printed on the ticket jacket or on the back of a e-ticket when printed out at check-in.
Every airline has different limits based on their insurance policies.

if its valuable, carry it with you on the plane. Most airlines payout limit for lost luggage is around 800 dollars internationally
