Question Rear turn signal intermittent fault - common?

Hi All,

I am very new here and new to forums actually.. I purchased my M2C (2019) last June and not long after I collected I noticed this real intermittent 'rear left turn signal failure', where it would go into bulb failure mode and blink really fast but almost immediately after, it would stop but fault still on dash. I can turn car off and on again and then it goes and may not even re appear for a day! classic..

It does this very intermittently, and has done since I have owned it.. I have looked into some different forums and seen others having the same issue. Does anyone have any direct experience with a root cause and more importantly, a fix!?

I actually like using my indicators....

Any guidance would be appreciated! I reached out to main dealer and had no response as such...

Thanks!

LOL. A very well known problem with a couple of threads on it. There is even a BMW service bulletin on it.

Happens to me almost every time I drive the car. Super irritating. Seems to be more prominent in wet, rainy weather.

Yep, had mine replaced a few months back. Common enough that there were no questions asked when I brought it in.

I had this problem twice. First time they rerouted the wires to the turn signal. That fix lasted a year. Next they replaced the right turn signal assembly. So far so good for that fix.

As I said, there is a service bulletin on this problem. It had shown up in various F series models. So it is not unique to the M2. It happened when they introduced the LED taillights. Will they fix it out of warranty? I don’t know but if you complained about it under warranty and they didn’t fix it, then they should.

had the issue just once on my 2015 228ix -- so exact same taillight as your M2C. didnt occur until it was well out of warranty. i had to pay out of pocket for the repair / replacement...about $600 if i remember correctly.

Thank you! Yeah similar, mine is 19 and nearly a year out... may have to pay for this one but happy if it stops the issue. Nice sunset orange too, mine is the same

would happen all the time to my lci 2018 after a wash or heavy rain whenever it was not parked in my girlfriend's garage lol...it was annoying

First time i brought it in they messed with the wires and "cleaned it" basically like turning on and off your microsoft computer...

Second time my service rep basically said F this as he is very cool with me and he replaced the entire housing-Sterling VA BMW service btw. It has been fine ever since.

I would insist on a total replacement and that should fix the dreaded right turn malfunction tail light blinker of death.

2020 M2C. Its raining now and I just had this happen today. It was LEFT REAR turn signal error. Also, forced the entertainment system to reboot and I heard a scratching sound. Working now. Please advise on the TSB from BMW so I can print out and take to the dealership???? Thanks!

As a note the turn signal malfunctions are stored by your M2C and show both right and left turn signal errors.

Wow, crazy pricing. The part is available from Zeigler BMW's online site for $197.91, and installation is simple.

First drivers side then passenger side, both got replaced separately within 6 months

Data points: service knew about it, changed em without much fuss

Got fun loaners for the day(s) it was in

I don’t drive it much, it’s asleep until spring, usually just a few k miles per year

My advisors ultimate solution was to replace the rear taillight assembly under warranty.

When I picked up my ‘18 M2 early last year, it pretty quickly started showing these turn signal errors in both signals.

I reported it to the local dealership service department and they didn’t take a second look. Their attitude was one of, “oh, another one of these. We know the drill, let’s get those turn signals replaced.”

Since then: no further signal errors. It’s been a very rainy winter season here in California and the signal errors haven’t returned. So maybe the turn signal units have been improved? Or maybe it just takes time for the problem to reoccur?

I’m hopeful that the two-year warranty on the dealer-replaced turn signals will be enough to cover me. Otherwise maybe the turn signal units will last long enough until FCP Euro starts carrying them and then I’ll be covered by their lifetime replacement guarantee.
