M2C is Pretty Cool
(insert radio call-in voice) "Long time lurker, first time poster"
Brief history in that I've only ever owned two cars: 1993 Mitsubishi Eclipse (1.8L, 5 speed, ~14 bhp) I bought in High School 2000 Mitsubishi Eclipse (2.0L, 5 speed, ~14.5 bhp) I bought from summer working money before college. Please feel free to judge my choices, but I was broke and wanted to rattle through gears! That's it. I moved out of the country in 2012 and literally gave my Eclipse to charity. I ended up moving around for work and living in countries which I either was driven around for security reasons or I could take public transportation. I decided last year to quit my job and move back to the US. Then I thought, "Oh crap I now need a car again" LUCKILY: They have stopped making the Eclipse and I have a big-boy job so I can finally get something I actually want and not just something I can afford. I wanted something with a manual transmission which wasn't a Ford/Dodge/Chevy, under warranty, and less than $80k to use as a daily driver. I would also be commuting around 50 miles round-trip per day for work so this baby was gonna get some miles. Doing research before moving back here, it turns out it's expensive AF to not only live in California (I had always been in Texas / Oklahoma / Virginia previously), but also taxes paid on new vehicles is stupid expensive. So while the MSRP on a car might be $40k, expect to pay WAY more here than anywhere else. Thanks Obama. When my now company flew me out here for the interview, I test drove a CPO 718 GTS, CPO 2017 F-Type S, and a new M2C. F-Type was my favorite for looks and sound but the interior was trashy and cheap, 718 GTS was my favorite for feels but the sound was meh, and the M2C was my favorite for practicality. Oh, and it absolutely ripped. Don't forget my nicest previous car was a piece of junk, so driving all three of these made me smile like a little kid. I had never bought a car from a dealership before and holy crap what a miserable experience walking in and listening to these blithering idiots trying to shove lies up your ass about their cars, and how much better they were than the other ones I was looking at. The guy at the Porsche dealership said, "You don't want to M2C, that thing will depreciate horribly" FYI - the forthcoming new GTS has a 6-cylinder option, so suck on that. The guy at the BMW dealership walked me to the M2C and then said, "yeah these guys rip, but we should REALLY try out the Competition version, they're better than these." My retort, "The competition is the only one that's made currently, there is no new base M2" So he literally walked around to the back of the car, looked at the badge, and goes, "This one is a Competition model" ANYWAYS: I thought the M2C was the best choice as it was brand new, had 4 seats (I'm single, no family, no dog, but like the bit of extra space for random events and weekend trips), and was the most comfortable for the daily journeys. I then started ghost stalking all of you lovely people on this forum and learned a lot, so thanks! I found one I really liked which was a 2020 M2C, HS, Exec Package, and a couple little things like the metal pedals and floor mats but that was about it. I could have it at invoice +$500. So I pulled the trigger. Said I would be there in a month to pick it up. Then the dealer went silent to all transmission. So, screw them. I'm actually very grateful for this, as I then found what I currently drive: 2020 M2C, LBB, Exec Package, M Performance Exhaust w/ carbon fiber tips. I got it at invoice as well. Did the majority of the paper work while I was still overseas, flew in on a Friday night, went to the dealership when it opened Saturday morning and drove off that same morning. I was scared shitless of wrecking it because I've never had a car with this much power, but BMW has done such a great job of allowing you to rip it but also keep you under control with the standard traction control on. I haven't dare put it into MDM yet or worse. I took it on a nice little jaunt this past weekend to Julian and the smile on my face they entire time actually caused some soreness the next day in my cheeks. This thing is so much fun to drive, sounds AMAZING, and the LBB looks awesome in this Southern California sunshine. I've had so many people comment on it which is really strange, because I never got that in my forest green '93 Eclipse. The people in the In 'n Out drive-thru love it the most. Thanks to everyone who is writing stuff in here and the sub-forums to which I've been stalking the past few months, you've truly helped me land on something which I've always wanted! TL/DR - M2C is fun and better than a '93 eclipse. |

Ha! Great story.
As I am likely to update to M2cs, I thought I'd go to the Porsche dealer and have a look at the new 911. Call it due diligence. I said to the dealer, I am probably going to get an M2cs but I want to look at the 911 as I really like this new one. His comment was "Ooh, yes, I have been reading about those!". I found that quite bizarre. He sounded genuinely excited about the M2cs. Anyway, long story short, I prefer the M2C over the 911, let alone the M2cs. Granted the 911 is a bit quicker, but really, that's just academic. There are loads of other areas that it falls short for me personally. Also, the price is nuts. |

Congrats OP! Originally I was so darn sure I wanted HS. However, I have been convinced to go with LBB as it just pops!
