It's amazing with your pics (as well as those of others) how much more gold the wheels are off-axis (i.e., more normal to the spoke surfaces themselves and reflecting external light). Comparing your two images you'd swear they were different wheels. Something to do with Total Internal Reflection and Bidirectional Reflectance Distribution Function (BRDF) - no doubt one of the smart guys on here can provide a proper, physics-based explanation.
