I bought this board that is quite small, has a relay to act in parallel to the drive mode switch, supports 12volt power and has a ESP8266 processor board. It even has wifi if one wants to control it, change it's settings or something that way.

Yes and I can confirm this. I have a 2015 X5 35d (F15). frustrating that I can set my diesel SUV to default into Sport upon startup but I cannot configure my M2 to behave the same way, unfortunately.
