Hey guys just a quick question here. My car is a 2018 year model and i want to know when will the first Smog take place? I bought the car from my relative last year and during the DMV office visit, they didn't require the Smog since it's fairly new.

So is it 4 years (in 2022) or 8 years (2026) now?

Four years refers to title transfer.

Vehicle is four or less model-years old. Example: In 2012, model years 2012, 2011, 2010, and 2009 are not subject to inspection upon transfer of ownership.

For eight years, one does not need a smog check. The eight years counts from the model year and not the date in service.

Fifth thru eighth model-year vehicles are not subject to biennial Smog Checks. However, a change-of-ownership Smog Check is required. Add eight to the model- year of a vehicle to determine the first year a vehicle will be subject to a biennial Smog Check. For example, a 2010 model-year vehicle will be first subject to a biennial Smog Check in 2016 (2010+8=2018).

It's so ridiculous that it's 8 years for a new car but 2 for an older used car. People with money can just run no cats and trade it in when they're done with it, then repeat. People who can only afford used cars get inspected every two years and basically any mod including software will fail it
