720 miles & 40 days - my M2C was towed to the dealership.

720 miles on the odometer & 40 days on a new 2020 M2C and my dash lit up like a Christmas tree and with barely any power to pull over to the side to shut it off. I've been driving within the outlined parameters of pre-breakin service and there were no indicators prior to my car breaking down.

Luckily I was driving on city streets and not on the freeway when this occurred. I was at a stoplight waiting for the light to turn green, when it did, I immediately lost all power and got all the indicators on the instrument cluster and on the Drive screen. I luckily had enough power to pull into a neighborhood where I was able to call in BMW Roadside service. They already knew about all of the errors on their screen which was nice that I didn't need to explain anything. Took about an hour for a tow truck driver to show up but no worries. The tow truck driver was very respectable, clean, and meticulous about making sure not to damage my car.

Below are pictures I took of my iDrive screen. The service advisor said it'll take a few days for them to figure out whats wrong with the car and also advised to proceed with the break in service, to which I agreed. I'm a bit bummed but it's fine, I have faith it'll all get sorted out, and I still love the car. I just hope that it's not a precurer for things to come. I will update as soon as information comes in.

***See post #41 for the latest update.***

Sorry to hear that. Hopefully they will fix the problem quickly.

Ask for a loaner. For warranty service they have to give you one.

I declined. Rather let someone else have that option at the dealership who probably would really need it. I have a shared family GMC Sierra truck that sits at my place unused 90% of the year, plus I am still working at home 3 days a week.

Wonder if it's a battery issue. I know my Porsches go wonky like that with errors when the battery is low.

I'm hoping it is. I wonder when the car sat at the dealership for almost a year before I acquired it that the wrong charger was being used. Being it's one of those super expensive Li-Ion batteries, I know how your typical lead acid battery charger can damage Li-Ion batteries.

Sounds like a wiring short issue; all those components don't all go out at once, more so a communication break with each other, triggering the faults..

I hope it's not a case like where rats chew through your wire harness and short the electrical, that's the last time I saw a similar symptom but let's see..

Could possibly be a wheel speed sensor fault, hope it's something simple and don't loose faith there such an awesome drive.

+1 on the defective battery theory. Yes, it does occasionally happen with brand new ones. Perhaps a loose ground. Very likely something simple - clearly all of those separate systems haven't failed. Good luck.

The M2C does not have an Li battery. It's a typical battery of yesteryear.

Chill, probably a wiring or battery issue. In my other German cars, when the battery goes, they tend to throw all kinds of warning. Like others said, all these systems cannot fail at once. Hope they get the M2 back in your hands in no time

I had a similar issue.
Dealer replaced instrument cluster after battery.

Just re-emphasizing this. If you use a dual-mode battery changer, use the "normal" setting, not the Li setting. Note this is different than the F8X M3/4, which do have a Li battery.

OP, sorry to hear. I'm sure it will all be sorted.

Still waiting to hear back from my service advisor as to what the issue is, but looks like they are working on it now. In the BMW Connected app, I can see the caution symbol has disappeared and the next service due date has changed. Progress!

**Edit**
Spoke too soon. Got a call from my service advisor. Yes the battery is shot, but I was accused of leaving the lights on and it's not being covered under warranty. They are also seeing something wrong with the DME and was questioned if the car was tuned. The dealership opened a case with BMW and now they are going to "try to find" if there was a tune on the car. Car will stay at the dealership through next week until they can figure out whats wrong with the DME.

Sounds like typical stealership bullcrap to me. The battery probably was low and needed recharging because you rarely drive your vehicle, based on your own admission. That's all!

I ran out of gas while driving a few days ago (don't ask) and all the lights on my dashboard came on like a Christmas tree, including the general "Drivetrain Malfunction" on the iDrive and car shut off. A ride in a Uber and a 2 gallon of gas in a portable tank later, the car started up just fine and all the lights disappeared.

I bet you anything that battery on your new vehicle is just fine but they can't just recharge it, reset the computer and let you on your way; they have to now pad the bill somehow.

Tell them you want the "defective" 😒 battery back, I'll buy it - and watch them change their tune and not charge you for a new one.

And would let them spin their wheels at that tuning nonsense. I would of been happy if that was me; it would of just meant more time to burn out and smoke weed in their loaner car.

I called BMW NA just to give them an update as to what the dealership told me. I just want to get ahead of things and have a history on file about my car and my BMW service experience thus far in case this all takes a left turn. I mentioned on the phone that I didn't like being accused of tuning my car and leaving the lights on when the engine is off. I've kept my headlight switch on auto since owning it. I know it's not my service advisor, he's just the monkey in the middle between the technician and me and I made sure to mention that to BMW NA.

Here's the kicker, I purchased my car on Feb 10 of this year from a dealership that was 212 miles away. The car apparently had 70 miles on it before the porter drove it down, so all in all, I've only driven the car 438 miles.

Still hopeful...

That’s ridiculous they are blaming you. I was ask for them to provide definite proof. Yet another reason to detest the dealership model. Dare we ask which dealership?

The good news is that this is relatively easy fix. Good luck OP!

Sorry you are dealing with this BS, but can we actually even leave our lights on anymore?!?! I mean, aren't cars smart enough to turn them off when you turn off the engine, or say a few minutes later so the battery doesn't die?? I dont even remember the last time I left my lights on......

The battery in an M2 is actually an AGM battery. Which is a form of lead acid battery but with a different charging profile. Get a charger with an AGM setting to get the longest battery life.

Boy, wouldn't it be quite a doozy if I was sold a molested car as a "new" car from a BMW dealership.

That's what I am thinking. Isn't that part of IBS unless I am 100% wrong? I know my Audi would eventually shut everything down if I left say a dome light on. Hell, even my 2019 GMC Sierra base work truck will do that as well.

All the lights and electronics shut off for themselves after 15 mins of the vehicle being powered down, except when you leave the "parking" light switch on. But that would be obvious, since the running lights, front to back, would be illuminated and that literally takes days to fully deplete a fully charged battery.

However, a battery can drained in spite of trouble free electronics or user error just from merely not driving often.

Just ask any garage queen Ferrari owners how often they have to recharge the battery on their quarter million dollar car, just from it sitting for months in a climate-control garage.

The dealer really sounds like they're just to ramp up some expense to charge. That's kind of their thing, I experience it all the time but I let them know that I'm not the one; I'm just here for the free donuts and inclusive warranty... I have stories, no need to share.
