Turbo lag between 2-3k rpms

Hey everyone. I just installed an air intake today by vrsf. Everything went well with the install it was perfect. Since I put the intakes on I've noticed that between 2-3k rpms there is a noticeable amount of turbo lag. The turbos just spool up pretty loud and the car barely accelerate until 3k rpms. I'm pretty sure it's normal but maybe I'm just noticing it now that I have the intakes in and am mashing the throttle more. Saw a few other guys mention the same on the m4 forums. Thanks guys

Doesn’t really sound normal to me. I have no noticeable lag unless I’m at really low rpms.

I dunno, i think the car would throw a CEL if there was something going on with the turbos. I rarely notice the lag, but I think it's because i've just subconsciously learned to drive drive around it. There's a spot by my house where I make a left turn onto a steep hill and I sometimes end up in second gear there, creeping along, just due to traffic. The lag is super pronounced and i'm always reminded of driving my old 1988 celica, because it feels like an 80's turbo under those particular conditions.

I just recently bought a comp and have noticed there seems to be significant lag in the 0-3k RPM range, at least compared to my old OG.

You really don't feel the hard pull until 3k if you're crusing along in 2nd at say 1500 then get on the gas.

If you're banging gears you stay out of that range so not really noticable.

I haven't driven many cars so don't have a good baseline for what turbo lag is supposed to feel like.

But I'd agree with anyone that said that the car doesn't really come alive til 3k rpm.

Between 2-3k if I give it gas it'll certainly go …. but it's at 3k where it really starts to pick up 🤷*♂️

Photos?

If the intake is exposed in the engine bay then low rpm will always suffer due to intake sucking in hot air in the engine bay

If the intake is enclosed then there wouldn’t be much difference in the low rpm pull. The price is obviously a lot more expensive.

I wouldn’t bother with an intake if it’s power you are after until you start changing the turbos

It's supposed to be like that. In my old tuned m135i, I had full turbopressure at 2k rpm, in the m2 comp it is s55.
The turbopressure feels more linear in the s55, and more laggy/ exponential increasing in the n55.

BMW mapped out the spikey boost response under 3k rpm on all S55 engines around 2016. Made it more tractable. So it is a fact that boost gain is slower than it could be.

As for the air intake, you are probably much more aware of the lag as you now have an audible reference that you didn't have with the stock air box set. This is even true on an NA engine. When the throttle butterflies open the sound change is immediate, but it takes time for the engine to respond in power output. Try it on the lawnmower next time. Full throttle quickly and see how long the engine revs rise to suit.

I don't think this is normal. I used to drive a stage 2 STi and the boost lag is more pronounced, still with an intake it should somewhat act like stock. But then again, I'm on BM3 stage 1 and don't remember how stock drives anymore

I mean there is turbo lag like all turbo cars I've ever owned. If it's hot with the ac on it doesn't help. Also doesn't help if the car is cold. The ecu seems to hold back on power when the engine is cold.

That being said the power comes on in a more linear fashion then the other cars I've owned.

Again, doesn’t seem normal to me. The M2C can make full torque at 2350 rpms and the twin turbo setup is known to be quick spooling. If you are hearing the turbos spool but you aren’t really moving, might have more to do with the DME modulating power to be more linear vs turbo lag.

Put the stock intake back and see if it goes away. You're probably over-noticing the lag that was already there.

My MT6 was a chug-slug in 2nd on a slow hard turn, now I shift to 1st as needed. My custom E tune also added a bunch of torque down low so I don't notice it as much anymore.
