Tips for a potential buyer

Hi, I've been a long time member/lurker of bimmerpost (had a 2000 M5 and 2007 335i) but haven't owned a BMW since 2012. I'm looking to potentially purchase an M2 Competition 6MT and was looking for buying tips/tricks and any gotchas for this vehicle. Off the top I got the following questions:
  1. I've read that the new 2021 M2Cs are NOT tunable -- can someone elaborate on this?
  2. What does it mean by PCD?
  3. If I were to buy a used one (or assume a lease) what should I look out for? Are there any known issues with these cars?
  4. I see new inventory and inventory in general is low, if someone places order now what are people seeing in terms of wait times?

I'm located in MD near DC.

Thanks in advance,

2020/2021 M2Cs can be tuned if the DME is bench unlocked. It all depends on the date the car was made.

If you're planning on running things like e85 or upgraded turbos, it would be highly recommended to install an upgraded crank hub, which is really the biggest problem on the S55.

For anything else, most will recommend a crank bolt capture, while others still recommend an upgraded hub.

You can read through this thread:
https://f87.bimmerpost.com/forums/sh....php?t=1651691

Other than that, the car is a monster and you won't regret the purchase

PCD means performance center delivery at the BMW factory in South Carolina. With delivery, you also get to participate in driving events that showcase different BMW and M models.

I placed an order on January 28 and am not expecting to take delivery until the week of April 19. So the lead time is about 3 months.

Thanks, I probably would not want to do anything other than an axleback exhaust and maybe a tune. What do I need to look for in terms of build dates for tunability? Also, why would BMW lock this out? I wonder which model year would be best for resale, etc.

Thanks, that looks cool. Seems like this is a free program, excluding the cost of getting there? Are people basically paying MSRP at this point?

Is a DC area dealer not able to order you one? Or are you looking for off the lot?

There are 2 high volume dealers here (DC area), but lot inventory is almost 0. Was never the case, but I think the M2 end of run is bringing in buyers. What spec are you seeking?

I haven't really reached out to local dealers yet, just testing the waters and trying to get more info. Which are the 2 high volume dealers here? Looking for M2C 6MT with Executive Package. No moonroof, no dct, etc.

Given end of life, you may want to hurry and order. At this stage you wont find MT on the lot. Not sure where in MD you are but for me, Rockville and Alexandria.

1. Correct, the only M2Cs that are tunable are early 2019 models.
2. Just a place where you can take delivery of the car.
3. No real issues stand out on these cars. They are pretty stout and a performance bargain.
4. I believe the end of production is in June so I would get on that.

Good luck, it really is an amazing car.

if you're going to try to order new production, then make 100% sure the dealer has an allocation in hand -- this is an accepted build slot from the factory. if they do not have an allocation at this point, then your deposit will simply be a wish, not an order, since production is scheduled to end in june.

i got my allocation through BMW of rockville after calling around to basically every dealership in the DMV back in earlymid february. shortly after placing my order with rockville, i received a follow-up call from catonsville and they had just received an allocation for an april build. many large dealerships told me they had not seen M2C allocations since last summer (2020).

bottom line: start calling NOW, and don't stop until you find an allocation. be ready with a $5000 deposit if you want it, and do not hesitate since the allocations disappear quickly! you will likely not be able to negotiate a discount off MSRP....but maybe ask them to throw in some M Performance parts (also not likely...but why not ask).

for me, it was worth paying only the slight premium to build a new car exactly how i wanted vs. buying a used M2C. used prices are within 10% of a new build...the difference isnt worth possibly buying a high performance car that someone else has mistreated.

And to add to that thought - which I agree with 100% - if you do find a dealer claiming to hold an allocation, they SHOULD be able to place your factory order immediately, and provide you with a copy of the confirmation that it's been accepted and is in the queue. If they stall when asked for this, most likely the allocation doesn't exist and they are "hoping" to receive one somehow. Run, don't walk, from anyone making hollow promises, especially this late in the game.

M2C dme for tuning became locked on cars made sometime between June 2020 and august 2020. Some cars made in this window can be tuned, some can't. Those made after august 2020 can't. The cars that can be tuned some you just plug into OBD port some you have to bench unlock.
