Yes. One model from one manufacturer...sales leader perhaps, but not a technical standout.

Who cares?? I am going to buy a Tesla because it has all the latest technology and is cool as hell. I don't care about its "environmental impact". And I think a lot of people are going to buy it because its going to be much cooler than a soon-to-be lame 3 series. It will have more tech, will be faster, and has a kick ass auto pilot. And it sounds so cool, when u drive one, like a spaceship, so much torque!

Thats the problem with Bolt, the i3, and i8. They are marketed as some climate change stopping products and thus are boring as hell and will flop. Tesla is not marketing it as any such thing, but a kick ass car, that just happens to be electric.

Its already having impact on BMW: https://www.reddit.com/r/teslamotors...o_bmw_3series/

Technology? No.

Hundreds of laptop-computer size batteries is not an advance in technology.

Tesla has pretty much had the field to itself and come up with bland cars that accelerate well once or twice and then overheat. The interiors are cheap, the switchgear embarrassing and the ergonomics is horrendous. They can communicate with homebase, and download new programming, but that's about it.

When real automobile manufacturers, with a century plus of manufacturing history decide to compete Tesla will be ground into the dust.

Like about now.

And that's assuming Tesla can deliver, and deliver with quality, assuming they show long term reliability and attract repeat buyers.

Here are worldwide sales numbers for 2016.

Tesla has a lead in tech for now, but others have lead in everything else. Cash, experience in designing, producing and testing vehicle, established manufacturing and sales network, more resources. I think it's matter of time before they catch up, and I hope they do so fast. We will all benefit by having better and less expensive products competing for our money.
500,000 is more than BMW 3 Series AH3 and 330e have sold in their entire run (probably could include the i3 and i8 in there as well...Perhaps ALL BMW AH models)

So in comparison 500,000 is a huge number.

My M4 interior is pretty nice. It doesn't have a huge computer screen that I need to manipulate to get the car to perform basic functions. It has real swtichgear that doesn't look or feel cheap.

GM, BMW, and every other electric car maker and wannabe-maker would kill for 500,000 pre-orders.
You're missing my point a bit I think.
Other manufacturers consistently deliver those numbers and more and have been doing so for many years, without need for pre-orders. So while that number is admirable (and a bit surprising to me personally) Tesla still needs to prove then can actually deliver, and deliver with quality, something other manufacturers already do.

For electric cars, and also it's more than Tesla has sold (or build) yet too.

i3 and i8 orders have already been paid for built and sold, these are all pre-orders, keep that in mind. Once Tesla delivers and fully gets paid for these vehicles, then builds a bit of reputation for solid quality, fit and finish, then these numbers become even more important.

Agreed. An iPad is not an attractive nor desirable center console. There's also a reason that with so few parts they still get the worst rating in reliability from consumer reports. And there's plenty of people like me who could care less about tech in a car. I still don't use most of the stuff that came with my 2008 335i let alone my 2013 MB GL450. Useless expence I'd rather not pay for.

All these things Tesla has had problems with so far with their current lineup. Too many potential issues for my comfort level.

Fun to ride for now but don't be caught without a chair when the music stops.
This is just way too much common sense, I'd rather you tell me where can I pre-order my new Tesla vehicle, no test drive needed, sight unseen?

Guess we'll know in 2 months.

Although it means it won't be available until 2019 I really hope it's based on the G20 and not the current 3 series. Perhaps it's a generic G20 concept and all we get to know from Frankfurt is that it will be available as an all electric at some point... that would be typical BMW...

I don't know if you have driven either one of these cars, but having owned a E92 and an F30, and driving all of the other models, I can tell you the i3 is a blast to drive... the space inside and cavernous, the ride is firm, and the visibility is fantastic...The interior quality is far beyond the current F3x vehicles as well. I have been on many drives with multiple BMW's...and they all cannot believe an EV can keep up with them....it just needs more range and more power...which is what will come with the LCI...

As for the Fusion....it is 600 miles per tank. It is just like the iPerformance cars. No EV has 600 miles yet. It only goes 20 miles in electric mode.

^ thanks...yes..it's a Hybrid. For some reason my head was stuck in it's a straight EV.

Re: The i3. I've driven one..didn't like it. I really dislike the design; it has to be the ugliest EV on the market which is why I used 'POS' to describe it, albeit a bit harshly I suppose on second thought. I like it more than a Prius if that's any consolation lol. Do I want one? No. I'm old school; I like gas powered everything given the current offerings (918 being the exception.)

Unless you have an Indivudual interior with most surfaces covered, it's still pretty plastic.

Ditto your i8.

How's the switchgear on it?
