New BMW Fan

Hi folks,

New to the forum and BMW's in general. I'll be putting an order in for a 2020 M2C this week.

I've been a long time Japanese sports car fan and have owned the following over the years: '86 RX-7, '91 MR2 Turbo, '08 Mazdaspeed3, '12 MX-5 PRHT, '17 MX-5 RF. My current car is a '17 VW GTI S 4dr DSG.

After selling my MX-5 RF last October I've been on the hunt for a new sports car, but this time around something more practical and with much more power to contend with the altitude here in Denver. I also want this car to daily drive and replace my GTI. I find that when I have a weekend only car I over obsess, baby it, and basically never end up driving it.

Over the months I've narrowed my focus down to the 718 Cayman and the M2C. This past weekend I finally got the chance to drive both starting with the 718. The Cayman I drove was a new 2018 base with PDK and that's about it. I've never driven a Porsche before and fully expected to love it. Man was I wrong. At least at this altitude I found the base 2.0 turbo 4 completely gutless and unresponsive at anything below 3,000 RPM. Considerably worse than my GTI. In fact, I would say at legal speeds the car overall was less engaging and fun than the GTI. It felt like a street legal race car that needed to be rung out constantly to be enjoyable. I can understand liking that. Especially if you'll actually track it (I don't race), but it wasn't the right fit for me and honestly turned me off from the whole brand.

On the way home from the Porsche dealer I decided to stop at the BMW dealer and drive one of their M2C's. The one I drove had DCT, moonroof, and the executive package. I absolutely loved it. Very quiet in efficient mode (at least compared to the Cayman and even my GTI), firm but still comfortable over rough roads (IMHO), and an absolute blast when you want it to be. As an added bonus my wife gave it an enthusiastic thumbs up as well.

This was the first BMW I've driven and I came away very impressed. On top of that everyone at my local dealer was extremely friendly, knowledgeable, and helpful. So I'll be moving forward with getting an order in this week. Just waiting to hear back on whether they have an allocation available or if there's a waiting list. Here's the build:

Hockenheim Silver
Black wheels
Blue stitching
Carbon fiber trim
DCT
Moonroof
Executive Package

BMW has hit a homer with the M2. It caters to the enthusiast and hopefully we as consumers can vote with our wallets to keep cars like this coming down the pipeline. More and more car companies have to concentrate on selling crossover SUVs in order to turn a healthy profit, but hopefully true enthusiast cars will continue to be produced.

Welcome to the BMW, I'm sure you'll absolutely love it. I'm personally waiting for mine to be completed on March 20th, after leaving the brand for some time (life happens). 2020MY M2C 6MT, HS, Exec + a bunch of CF BMW Performance parts.... can't express how lucky and excited I feel.

I will say though, you can't completely disregard all of Porsche after driving their entry level car.

For sure. Got a call back from the dealer moments ago. Three allocations available with expected build 04/22. So I'm voting with a deposit and order today

Thank you!

Point taken on Porsche. One thing I'm considering though is comments from many owners that the Boxster/Cayman is more engaging than current 911's perhaps because the limits are so high on a 991.1/2. However, I felt that was already the case even with the 718 I drove. Though I suspect my complaints with the engine would mostly be addressed with the 2.5 and its variable vain turbo.

Also worth noting that as a MX-5 fan I'm used to cars that feel like they're on the edge at 30MPH haha. I think it's a hard recipe to create a car that is both extremely capable, yet still feels fun and engaging at sane speeds. My limited seat time in the M2C tells me BMW somehow nailed the formula. In fact in the Smoking Tire review by Zach Klapman he described the M2C as BMW's Miata

m2c size is very similar to the old e46 m3 ... there is nothing Miata about it at 3600 lbs ... it's a small tank

I thought this thread was about some new after-market fan being developed for the ///M2C.

Classic bait and switch. You thought you were about to discover some interesting info about parts for your car. Instead all you got was some idiot rambling.

...I think I just described 95% of content on the internet

I sold my RF last August to come to an M2C too!

If I didn't have my 320i I'd be driving a GTI DSG as a DD. We would have been car twins!

I still have my 08 Miata though.

Nice!

I loved the RF, but it didn't work out for me for a variety of reasons. Too low on power in Denver, passenger space was super cramped, and my 70lb dog didn't fit in it (surprise surprise).

I also love my GTI. However, it is pretty underwhelming on a back road and doesn't fill the sports car role at all (because well, it isn't one). I also don't want an extra car just for DD. So it'll be sold after the M2C arrives.

The GTI is a great all rounder and is a really fun, practical DD. I have one now in the family and I am always impressed with it. That being said - good choice on the M2C and I would not want the base Cayman either. Not practical compared to the M2C and a bit gutless.

Everything I've seen backs up your findings OP. The base Cayman is not a contender to the M2C. The Cayman GTS, however, is supposed to be the darling and a peach to drive. However at $20k more than the base M2C I'm going to say it may be in a different market. I'd like to own a P-car one day but that is out of my current price range.

Agreed, to get anywhere near M2C excitement levels in a Porsche, you need to drop about $90k or more. The 911 is awesome, but you'll spend even more! The M2C is one heck of an awesome and exciting sports car. I can't wait to see what the next CS version drives like.
