+1 I actually prefer it once it's painted

I don't mind it at all, and not one person has ever mentioned it, out of many many people I've had car chats with standing next to it and walking round it.

Not one mention, at all, ever....

I went to a BMWCCA event in late December and had pretty much the opposite experience. Most people thought the exhaust was aftermarket.

At any rate, ordered a Remus exhaust to replace it.

I might order a AA mid pipe to get rid of secondary cats and resonator and paint stock muffler black.

I think this has many benefits. Cheapest option, reduce weight, and give more power than just a aftermarket axle back muffler.

Ugly muffler might have a purpose

There have been numerous posts about that ugly low hanging muffler, but now I'm thinking the engineers designed it that way. We all know about downforce and why it’s beneficial, but do you understand the physics behind it? The Venturi Effect is the principle that causes the “downforce” in F1 cars, supercars, and even our M2C. My thought is that the muffler causes the air to speed up under it, thus causing a low-pressure effect towards the rear once it exits. This low pressure acts as a vacuum, pressing the car down. I can’t imagine why the BMW engineers would place the muffler so low when they could’ve easily engineered it to sit up higher, unless it was designed to aid in downforce. I’d like to hear your thoughts on this, and I’ve added a youtube video on the Venturi Effect.

Exactly what I was thinking. I drive this thing all winter... Some more downforce at highway speeds would be nice.

Haha, maybe!

"The distractingly large muffler" - sounds like a girl I once met, but that's for a different forum...

The rear section of the M2 does absolutely nothing for downforce. There are way too many discontinuities under the car in the rear which allow for air pockets, thus forming air vortexes in those pockets. This disrupts any chance of the expansion and thus acceleration of the air at the rear diffuser of the car, which would normally cause downforce in sports/race cars.

tl;dr: no, no downforce caused by the huge muffler. Just bad design to make S55 sound "better"

Wait a sec, there could be some measured downforce simply from the weight of that monster muffy!

I gotta tell ya, I can't figure that one out. They must've spent countless hours on the esthetics, contours, etc but left an eyesore in the rear. It would've been so easy to paint that at the factory.

1.) We have SO many threads about the muffler. Can an Admin here consolidate all of it into one giant thread, lol?

2.) For those who have painted it black, what process are you guys using? I've read everything from spraying it to hand painting it with a brush with the muffler still attached to the car. My concern with spraying with the muffler still attached is overspray (yes I know it's under the car but still I'm OCD about this kind of stuff), and hand brushing just seems like it would be a PITA, plus leave inconsistent brush strokes. I figure the best way to DIY paint it would be to remove the muffler, set up a paint area and then spray it? Thoughts?
